Tiki Barber says he 'started to shrivel'

Tiki Barber’s interview on HBO’s “Real Sports” debuts tonight and the former New York Giants running back talks about being sucked into a depression after his TV career went belly up.

Barber described in the interview with Armen Keteyian how many days he would get out of bed, have coffee and breakfast and then sit on the couch for 10 hours.

I started to shrivel. I didn't have that confidence. I didn't have that aura anymore,’’ Barber said, according to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post.

The 36-year-old is bidding to make an NFL comeback after four complete seasons away from the game.

“The game never needs you because there's always someone else to come and take your place,” Barber said. “But right now, I need the game. I need to prove to myself that I can be successful at something. I know I'm going to be successful as a football player. I don't know why. The odds say 'No.' I'm 36 and I haven't played in four years. But I just know.’’

The interview sounds like it is worth checking out. Barber talks about his failed marriage, his shortcomings working for NBC and his relationship with former intern Traci Johnson. During the interview, it is suggested former co-workers said he didn’t put in the time or effort needed on the job.

“I would be interested to hear someone say that to my face,’’ he said.

The show airs at 10 p.m. this evening.
