Titans fire Ken Whisenhunt, name Mike Mularkey as interim coach

The Tennessee Titans fired coach Ken Whisenhunt, naming Mike Mularkey as interim head coach. Whisenhunt went 1-6 this season, 3-20 overall. "We have expected more progress on the field, and I felt it was time to move in a different direction," Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement. "I would like to thank Ken for his efforts with our team, as he worked very hard to try to move us forward." The Titans went 2-14 last season. Although rookie quarterback and former Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota has been successful, the team isn't any better this year. The Titans have lost 16 of 17 games. Mularkey has been a head coach with the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars. He played nine years in the NFL with Minnesota and Pittsburgh. Mularkey also has been an offensive coordinator with Pittsburgh, Miami and Atlanta. aaron.wilson@chron.com twitter.com/AaronWilson_NFL
