Titus Young says he is better than Calvin Johnson
Titus Young’s father said his son was dealing with being cut by the Detroit Lions “pretty good” but you have to wonder if the former second-round pick will need a serious makeover to get another chance in the NFL.
The Lions booted Young on Monday – the first day NFL clubs were allowed to resume making roster moves – after a short two-year stay with the team that was filled with insubordination and apparently delusion.
Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that Young told his high school coach that he is a better wide receiver than Calvin Johnson, his former Lions teammate that just set the NFL single-season record for receiving yards.
“He did tell me he thought he was just as good Megatron,” said E.C. Robinson, Young’s coach at University High in Los Angeles. “I said, ‘Titus, come on.’ I said, ‘Come on, man. Who you talking to?’ I said, ‘Come on, you’re as good as that guy? This guy is the real deal.’ And he really believes this. And he was sincere about it. ‘Ah man, I’m better than him.’ I said, ‘No you’re not. Be real man. Come on.’ So I don’t know, I’m hoping for the best for him.”
Young is going to need a reality check because a lot of teams shied away from him in the 2011 draft because of character concerns. Those concerns have only been reinforced during his stay with the Lions. He’s got talent and that will most assuredly get him a look somewhere. But to excel and perform to the level of his skill – which is several notches below Johnson – he’ll need to get his head on straight.
