T.J. Lang stumping for Packers to bring back Scott Wells

The Green Bay Packers might be a long ways away from re-signing Pro Bowl center Scott Wells, and he’s been quiet lately with teammates.

But T.J. Lang believes it’s paramount the club works out a deal with Wells, who has been regarded as the team’s best lineman the last few seasons.

"He's really a role model for the other guys," Lang said, according to Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "He has shown us the right way to go about our business. If it happens, I think it'd be a huge loss for our offense. It'd definitely be a big loss to our whole offensive line group.

"I don't think people really understand how difficult it is to play center in our offense with the amount of information they need from knowing the play, getting up to the line, recognizing the defense, calling out the line calls. And on top of that, snapping it and blocking a guy. It's tough."

Packers coach Mike McCarthy tried to remain optimistic about the situation when he spoke at the NFL Scouting Combine. But Green Bay could already be seriously considering other options. The 31-year-old Wells has been a model performer but wants to be paid among the top centers in the league. Stay tuned.

"In my opinion, he has been a big, big part of our team's success over the last couple years," Lang said. "He's definitely a leader. I know I'm a guy who hopes he comes back and there are a lot of other guys, too. It'd be hard to watch him go.”
