Toledo quarterback, Alabama transfer Phillip Ely getting ready for Pro Day, regional combine

Toledo quarterback Phillip Ely has endured a lot on his path to the NFL. The Alabama transfer overcame a torn labrum and a torn anterior cruciate ligament. As a senior, the 6-foot-1, 202-pounder passed for 2,965 yards and 23 touchdowns with 10 interceptions for the Rockets. "I feel like I bring a lot of different things to the table," said Ely, who's represented by agent Chris Martin, a former Northwestern and NFL defensive back. "I have great leadership and expect a lot from my teammates. I believe I allow them to play to their full potential. Off the field, it's about being a good teammate and helping out in the community and use our professional athlete status to provide a good example. A former high school All-American in Tampa, Fla., at Plant High School, Ely completed 3 of 4 passes for 42 yards and a touchdown as a redshirt freshman at Alabama as a backup. In high school, Ely led his team to a state championship. He chose Alabama overĀ  LSU, Clemson, Mississippi, Wake Forest and Rutgers. "I knew I could hang with the top recruits," Ely said. "I've always believed in myself and I've always loved the underdog story. I've proven myself with my feet and arm strength. I'm just glad I was able to play for these coaches and put that experience to work and be a good teammate and captain for two years." Last season, Ely led Toledo to a road win over Arkansas, a 10-2 record and a bowl game win over Temple in Boca Raton, Fla. Ely threw an 80-yard touchdown pass inthat game. Ely has an NFL regional combine in Minneapolis on March 5 and his Pro Day at Toledo on March 14. Ely has been training with former Arena Football League quarterback John Kaleo. "John believes I have the arm strength and footwork to compete with some of these top guys," Ely said. "He's excited and so am I."
