Trade: Jon Baldwin to 49ers, A.J. Jenkins to Chiefs

In a rare player-for-player exchange, the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs traded their underwhelming former first-round wide receivers today.

The 49ers sent former first-round wide receiver A.J. Jenkins to the Chiefs for former first-round wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin, the teams announced.

"We are pleased to add Jonathan to our team and look forward to incorporating him into our offense," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement.

Neither player has distinguished themselves, so a change of scenery appears to be a good idea.

Jenkins played in just three games last season for the 49ers after being selected 30th overall out of Illinois, failing to catch a pass. He has been a disappointment so far this preseason.

Baldwin is a 6-foot-4, 230-pounder from Pitt selected 26th overall two seasons ago who has caught 41 passes for 579 yards and two touchdowns in two NFL seasons.

Jenkins caught 167 passes for 2,432 yards and 19 touchdowns as an All-Big Ten Conference selection at Illinois.

“We felt like this trade was beneficial for all parties involved,” Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said. “A.J. is a talented individual with a skillset that we feel can add value to our football team. Jon Baldwin is a hardworking player and a professional. We wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid was recently extremely candid about Baldwin's shortcomings.

"We gave him the opportunity this week and you have to catch the football,” Reid said. “That’s how it works, and he knows that and I know that. When we give you an opportunity, you have to make sure you take advantage of the opportunity. He needs to keep playing, and given the opportunity, he needs to take advantage of it.”
