Albert Haynesworth’s personal trainer is adamant that the defensive tackle has put his time to good use while skipping all but one day of the Washington Redskins offseason program, including the mandatory minicamp.

Haynesworth has dropped 32 pounds since the pair began working out April 5, according to a report in the Fredericksburg (Va.) Free Lance-Star. Tripp Smith, the son of Chip Smith, who founded Competitive Edge Sports in Atlanta, has essentially lived with Haynesworth this offseason.

“I think he's going to open some eyes when he gets to camp,” Tripp Smith told the newspaper.

Wow. To really open some eyes, Haynesworth might have to embrace his role as the nose tackle in the Redskins’ new 3-4 scheme. If Haynesworth shows up in better shape this season perhaps he will be posed to make a bigger impact on the field after already collecting $32 million from Daniel Snyder. Haynesworth picked his spots last season, according to scouts, and those spots were few and far between. It’s hard to say how impressive it is that Haynesworth has lost 32 pounds since April 5. How much did he pack on between January and then?

“Albert, he's the type of person that doesn't want to disappoint anybody, but he's very business-minded. I think it has motivated him quite a bit, just seeing what his teammates are saying about him,” Tripp Smith said. “And seeing what everybody in the press is saying about him."

Tripp Smith has traveled with Haynesworth during the offseason and has stayed in his home. They’ve been together for all but two weeks and will be working right up until camp begins at the end of the month.

“I told him, 'If you show up and are playing like an animal, they're going to forget about the fact that you didn't go to a two-day minicamp or whatever happened aside from football,'" Smith said. "We need to make sure we do what we need to do to basically blow people's heads off with what we've accomplished this summer.”

Haynesworth has put himself in a position where he is going to have to blow people away to be a welcome teammate in Washington.
