Tressel, Mornhinweg still connected to Colts' opening
MOBILE, Ala. _ Two names at the Senior Bowl continue to make the rounds regarding the Indianapolis Colts head coaching vacancy.
The first is former Ohio State Jim Tressel, who spent the 2011 season on the staff as a video replay consultant. The other is one-time Detroit Lions coach Marty Mornhinweg, who has spent the past several years as offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Mornhinweg has a connection of course with new general manager Ryan Grigson, who came over from the Eagles after Bill and Chris Polian were both ousted by owner Jim Irsay.
In regards to Tressel, there has been a negative connotation with college coaches in years past trying to make a successful transition to the NFL. Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban and Bobby Petrino all flopped in the pro game.
However, the recent success of Jim Harbaugh making the jump from Stanford taking the San Francisco 49ers to the doorstep of the Super Bowl in his first season may rekindle the thinking that the transition can be successful.
