Troy Aikman bangs Hall of Fame drum for Charles Haley

Troy Aikman wants to see Charles Haley in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The defensive end, who owns an NFL record five Super Bowl rings, was snubbed in the voting process earlier this month. Longtime Minnesota Vikings defensive end Chris Doleman got in and while Aikman didn’t say Doleman was undeserving, he made the point that Haley was a major part of championship defenses.

“I’ve been with Charles – I wasn’t this time – but I’ve been with Charles in other years when he hasn’t made it, so I know how disappointed he has been,” Aikman said on KTCK 1310, according to the Dallas Morning News. “I don’t campaign for anybody, and I don’t know that I’d necessarily campaign for Charles – I just don’t think that’s appropriate. But I’ve been very outspoken as far as his candidacy and how much I think he belongs. If there’s a defensive player in the (Hall of Fame), I think Charles Haley should be in the (Hall of Fame), and I’ll leave it at that. Because as a teammate, he was a great player.

“Chris was a great player, I’m not saying he shouldn’t be in either – but listening where he ranked in sacks compared to Charles Haley’s ranking in sacks and Pro Bowls. All that’s just numbers. My numbers wouldn’t have suggested that I should’ve gotten into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But it’s more than that. It’s not just about putting numbers up on the board and saying, ‘This guy deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.’ The stats are only relevant when somebody wants to use the stats as an argument as to why they voted for somebody or why they didn’t vote for somebody.

“When you go back and you look at the teams that won those five Super Bowls, he was a big part of those teams that one those five Super Bowls. That’s meaningful to me. And having had him on my team for three of them, I’m not so sure we would’ve won any of them if it weren’t for him. I’m pretty adamant about the fact that I believe he deserves to be in and I’m pretty disappointed that it hasn’t happened. But I believe it will.”
