Umenyiora unlikely to play in opener Sunday

While it’s not a surprise, it looks like Osi Umenyiora will be held out of the New York Giants’ season opener on Sunday against the Washington Redskins.

Umenyiora, who had arthroscopic knee surgery on his ailing right knee Aug. 19, was held out of practice on Monday, according to ESPN New York. He missed nearly all of training camp as he held out and then was sidelined waiting for his knee to respond.

I don’t think so,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said when he was asked if Umenyiora will play. “Little early.”

Fellow defensive end Justin Tuck was also out of practice and has been sidelined since suffering a stinger on Aug. 29 in the third preseason game. He’s expected to play Sunday.
