Vernon Davis cashes in with 49ers
Vernon Davis was next in line for a new contract with the San Francisco 49ers after linebacker Patrick Willis cashed in.
Davis does not have to wait any longer. The Pro Bowl tight end was rewarded on the eve of the start of the Niners’ season at Sunday in Seattle as he received a five-year contract extension.
The new deal will make Davis the highest-paid tight end in the NFL, vaulting him just ahead of Antonio Gates of the San Diego Chargers, according to NFL.com.
Gates’ deal is worth $37 million and he will receive $23 million guaranteed, the number that really matter. This is the final year of the rookie contract Davis received and now he is under contract through 2015.
Davis had a breakout season as Alex Smith’s favorite target last season when he caught 78 passes for 965 yards to go with 13 touchdowns.
