Vernon Davis: 'I strongly believe we should be the Super Bowl favorites'

After the San Francisco 49ers fell short of reaching the Super Bowl, tight end Vernon Davis couldn’t bring himself to watch the game.

The Niners had stumbled when they had an opportunity to win the NFC title game and he was crushed.

Now, he doesn’t see any reason why the 49ers should not be the favorites. In a wide-ranging interview with Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News, Davis expressed just that.

I strongly believe we should be the Super Bowl favorites,” Davis said. “But I can’t talk about it because it’s all about work. It starts here at practice. I don’t want to talk about it and brag and say this and that, because it’s not about that. It’s about working first. And in the end, you will see where you’ll be.

“A lot of guys are confident. We know what we have here. We just come out to work, that’s all you see. Guys working and guys who love the game.”

The loss to the New York Giants when the Niners were at home was difficult for Davis to handle.

“I wanted it, man. I wanted it bad. I’ve never been there,” he said. “It’s something I really wanted. It broke my heart that we didn’t get it. It really broke my heart.

“I got over it. The next day I was all right. I told myself that it wasn’t our time. Next year. The thing that made me happy is you live to see the next day and you get an opportunity to do it again. This team is ready. We smelled it, so we know what it’s like. There’s nothing like it. I’ve never experienced anything like that in my life. Your anxiety’s way up.”

And now pressure is up for a 49ers team that is still in what looks to be one of the weaker divisions. The 49ers won’t be sneaking up on any non-division opponents this year like they might have in 2012. It makes for an interesting season because many believe they are due for a backslide. Stay tuned.
