Vikings announce agreement with University for home games

The Minnesota Vikings will not be playing on an icy surface at TCF Bank Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota when they move there for two seasons beginning in 2014.

That is what the Vikings and Bears encountered in 2010 when the collapsed Metrodome roof led to the game being shifted to the nearby college campus. In an agreement the team has reached with the school, heating coils will be installed under a new turf field at the stadium.

The Vikings will pay the school $3 million each year to use the school, as well as reimburse the school for any game day expenses. The Vikings will also pay for any required capital improvements at the stadium, which would likely include the new field and heating coils, among other additions.

The Vikings plan to move into their new stadium in time for the 2016 season. This will be their final season at the Metrodome.

The agreement also stipulates the Vikings will be allowed to play one weeknight game per season at TCF Bank Stadium when University classes are not in session. Yes, if you were wondering, there will be beer sales at the stadium during Vikings games.
