Vikings expose Adrian Peterson to contact for first time

The Minnesota Vikings took the next step in getting Adrian Peterson ready for the regular season when they exposed the running back to contact in practice for the first time.

Defenders were allowed to hit Peterson for the first time on Monday without fear of losing their job. As he works his way back from a torn ACL, he had been strictly off-limits. Peterson has not played in preseason and he will sit out the team’s final game.

Today is another step in the process,” Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

But there are guidelines. Peterson can only be hit above the waist and he cannot be taken to the ground. It is practical because backs typically are not hit very much in practice. The goal is to see how Peterson’s knee responds to the action today. The veteran was ready for the action.

“He told (running backs coach) James Saxon, he said, ‘Coach, you better tell those defenders to buckle up,’” Frazier said. “I knew it would get him fired up. He did pretty good. We’ll see how he feels.’’
