Vikings need to stick to the facts with Brett Favre
A year ago, a man dressed in a full parrot costume stood outside the Vikings training complex in Eden Prairie, Minn., for the arrival of Brett Favre.
He was chauffeured by coach Brad Childress at that time. Today, it was kicker Ryan Longwell who drove Favre into the facility, with the assistance of a police escort.
No funny costumes were reported to be on hand. That doesn’t mean there was not a fair bit of funny business, however. Get this: guard Steve Hutchinson, defensive end Jared Allen and kicker Ryan Longwell travelled to Mississippi to close the deal with Favre and get him to report. For some reason, the Vikings lied about the whereabouts of their players. Special teams coordinator Brian Murphy said kicker Ryan Longwell was indoors kicking and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell followed up with some non-truths, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
“I know that there were some guys that were missing, but I was told by the head coach that they were inside,” Bevell said. “That's what he told me. I go with the guys that are out here practicing and worry about that.”
Why attempt to mislead people? It just doesn’t make sense. Plain honesty is the best policy. At all times. They should take a cue from Tarvaris Jackson, who is out of a starting job now that Favre has arrived.
“Honestly, I really don't care,” Jackson said in a revealing manner. “I feel like if my number is called I'll be ready and I'm going to continue to try and work hard and get better. That's all I can do. My teammates, that's their prerogative. I can't really control that. I'm just going to do my part.”
Sage Rosenfels could be the odd man out with Joe Webb in position to potentially be the third quarterback. Rosenfels was also candid.
“Everyone wants to know their position in life: one a team, in a family, all those things," he said. “There's a business side to this game and there's an emotional side to this game. I'm going to try and keep both sides out of it as far as the way I'm playing.”
