The Minnesota Vikings have suspended cornerback Chris Cook without pay after he was formally charged with felony domestic assault of his girlfriend.

Authorities alleged Cook attempted to choke his girlfriend during a fight in his Eden Prairie home early Saturday. He was incarcerated during Sunday’s game, a loss to the Green Bay Packers at the Metrodome. Cook posted $40,000 bail Tuesday afternoon and was released from the Hennepin County Jail, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He has a court appearance scheduled for this afternoon.

“Allegations against Chris Cook are very disturbing and disappointing,” the Vikings said in a statement. “At this time, he is suspended without pay from the team while we continue to gather information regarding the situation. We will have no further comment until the appropriate time.”

The woman allegedly assaulted by Cook had a bloody nose when police arrived at the residence at 1:40 a.m. She told police she has been dating Cook for 10 months. The woman said Cook attempted to choke her on two different occasions and swung her onto a bed and also knocked her into a wall. Police noted marks on her neck and hemorrhaging in one eye that could be a sign of strangulation.

Per the Star Tribune, Cook quickly took to his own defense after he was released from jail.

He wrote: “There's always two sides to a story!!" Later, Cook wrote: "My apologies to the fans! Vikings ownership, coaching staff, my teammates and friends and family!!"

Cook is subject to discipline by the NFL under the league’s personal conduct policy.
