Wes Welker downplays playbook flap

When Wes Welker played for the New England Patriots, he used to joke with New York Jets assistant coach Mike Smith about whether the Patriots had a copy of the Jets' playbook.

The former Patriots receiver went to Texas Tech with Smith and they remain close friends.

Welker weighed in on the situation following a controversy that arose from Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine passing on the story recently to Sports Illustrated.

Welker said Patrots quarterback Tom Brady joked with Smith during Welker's wedding.

"We used to always make stuff up with each other. Tom got to know Mike as well," Welker said told 98.5 The Sports Hub via ESPN Boston. "[Mike] used to say 'So and so will cover you in the game. No, actually we're going to double-team you.' So I'd make stuff up, 'Oh, this is our game plan going into it.' Every once in a while you [say] something true just to throw them off. And [you'd] say 'Is that true? Would they do that? It was just playing mind games a little bit."

Welker said he didn't know if the Patriots ever had a copy of the Jets' playbook.

What if they did?

"Every little bit helps," Welker said. "I don't know. It might a little bit."
