Who will take a flier on Gholston?

If Vernon Gholston clears waivers later today, the former first-round pick might best find a fit with one of two teams that pursued him after his initial release by the New York Jets.

The Indianapolis Colts and the Cleveland Browns could be two teams of interest for Gholston, a league source tells National Football Post.

Both those teams apparently had interest in him before he wound up signing with the Chicago Bears, who waived him on Monday.

Gholston, the sixth overall pick in the 2008 draft, was thought to be miscast in the Jets’ 3-4 scheme, and that a switch to a 4-3 might be better suited to the former Ohio State star’s talents.

However, Gholston was unable to make it in Chicago’s 4-3 system, as NFP’s Matt Bowen points out.

In terms of playing time, there might not be as much in Indianapolis where stars Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis man each end and another first-round castoff, Jamaal Anderson, is backing up.

However, the opportunity might be greater in Cleveland, if Gholston can show something. Currently, Cleveland defensive coordinator Dick Jauron currently has Jayme Mitchell and rookie Jabaal Sheard listed atop the Browns depth chart.
