With dancing title in hand, does Donald Driver return to Packers?
If Donald Driver has interest in transitioning into a second career, he’s made a heck of a start as a dancer.
The Green Bay Packers wide receiver was the winner Tuesday night on ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars,” making him the third professional football player to capture the title. Like Emmitt Smith and Hines Ward before him, Driver is the owner of a Super Bowl ring.
The question now in Green Bay is if Driver, 37, will have the opportunity to suit up and compete for another ring this season. There has been great speculation that the Packers will release Driver and move on with a host of younger options on the roster. He is due a $1.5 million roster bonus in July and has a base salary of $2.6 million. There is no way the Packers are going to pay him more than $4 million this season, and Driver has said he is open to a restructuring. We’ll see how deep the cut is if, indeed, the Packers bring him back at a reduce rate.
But it’s not a given Driver is with the Packers this season. The club made some tough choices to move on from other popular veteran players earlier this offseason. Driver is the franchise’s all-time leading receiver but the game stands still for no one.
