Witness: Josh Brent originally left Jerry Brown in burning car

Josh Brent left his friend and teammate Jerry Brown inside his wrecked Mercedes on Saturday morning until a woman at the scene of the crash asked him repeatedly to help.

In a video shot by the Dallas Morning News, Stacee McWilliams describes arriving on the crash site and seeing Brent pacing alongside the road after flipping his vehicle. Brent told McWilliams he was fine as there was a small fire in his car but didn’t indicate Brown was trapped inside the vehicle.

“It took no time at all for this fire to engage,” McWilliams said. “It became very big then I started to hear screams from inside the vehicle. It was a man’s voice saying, ‘Help me. Help. Somebody help me.

“Josh looked at me and he said he won’t get out of the car. I commanded him several times. I told him, ‘You cant stand here and let him die.’ He still didn’t move.”

After McWilliams went back to her vehicle and then returned, Brent had removed Brown from the car and left him in the middle of the road. McWiliams described seeing Brown move his arms and head ever so slightly. Brent had disappeared.

“I want people to understand that Josh Brent is not a hero,” McWilliams said. “I keep hearing reports of how he was there to pull his friend from the fire but he had to be coerced and pushed and begged and pleaded to get his friend out of the fire and when he pulled him out, he just left him in the street. He didn’t tell him ‘hang in there, help is on the way.’ Nothing. He just left him there and I want the magnitude of that to be understood.”
