Bills stuck with big bills

It hasn’t been a good week for the Buffalo Bills’ bills.

First, they traded star wide receiver Lee Evans after paying him a roster bonus of $1 million and a workout bonus of $100,000. Evans – after receiving that $1.1 million – was shipped to the Baltimore Ravens for the small price of a fourth-round draft pick.

Then the Bills threw in the towel on their top draft pick just two years ago, Aaron Maybin. Maybin, the 11th pick in the 2009 Draft, signed a contract with over $15 million guaranteed.

And the Bills will still be paying it, at least in part.

Maybin is guaranteed $757,500 this year. There is offset language in the contract, allowing for any new contract money to be offset against the Bills’ obligation. With Maybin signing a minimum one-year contract worth $525,000 with the Jets, the Bills will owe Maybin $757,500 minus the $525,000 this year, or $232,500 (assuming Maybin makes the team and plays the whole season).

The Bills hope Maybin plays and plays well enough to earn a contract net year. In 2012 Maybin is guaranteed $1.12 million minus whatever offset another team pays.

Lots of dollar bills out the door this week for the Bills.
