The words, and the real meaning behind them
Even though it’s the middle of May, the NFL spin cycle never rests. Here is this week’s version of What They Say and What They Mean:
Bengals cornerback Pacman Jones, on his time away from the game:
“I did a lot of soul searching.”
I did a lot of partying.
Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo, on not starting top pick Sam Bradford right away:
“If we played a game today, A.J. Feeley would be our quarterback.”
Fortunately, we don’t play games in May.
Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett, apologizing for showering in a video on the Internet:
“I apologized to my team and all the players. I have to do better things.”
Hope this doesn’t affect me trying to get a new deal. It wasn’t like porn or anything.
Ravens fullback Le’Ron McClain, on his contract situation:
“I just really want to see how everything goes around here. It’s just quiet and I have the tender over my head.”
I just really want to see if they make me play on this one-year deal or show me the money.
Andre Melton, the uncle and agent for Andre Johnson, on the prospects for a new deal for Johnson, which has five years remaining:
“I think we can work something out that'll be a win-win situation for everybody.”
I hope we can work something out that’s a win for Andre.
Titans coach Jeff Fisher, on the possibility of bringing back longtime star Keith Bulluck:
“We'd love to see if there is an opportunity where Keith would be able to finish his career here. But you have an unrestricted free agent and you have an ACL rehab.”
We’ll see if he’ll play for cheap.
Jets defensive end Jason Taylor, on the differences between the Jets and Dolphins:
“It is night and day. Everything here is a little more relaxed, I guess you can say.”
The Jets wanted me; the Dolphins didn’t.
Hall of Famer and former Buffalo Bills running back Thurman Thomas, on Bills RB Marshawn Lynch, who has had some off-field issues:
“If I was the GM, he’d be out of there.”
If I was the GM, I’d be in there.
Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher, responding to Gale Sayers’ criticism of the team:
“How many championships did Gale Sayers win? How many playoff games did he win when he played? None. None. None.”
One day I’ll be a retired Bear criticizing the team, but now I have to fight back.
Jets receiver Santonio Holmes, on the flight attendant who reported him to the police for not turning off his IPod on a flight last month:
“She was definitely just trying to make a name for herself.”
I guess this is what it means to play for New York instead of Pittsburgh.
Linebacker Zach Thomas, on signing a one-day contract with the Dolphins for the purpose of retiring:
“I want to thank the Dolphins for allowing me to come back and finish my career with the team.”
I’d like to be thanking the Dolphins for signing me for real instead of this fake contract to retire.
Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe, on life on the road for an NFL player:
“You hear stories about groupies hanging out in hotel lobbies, but some of my teammates had it set up so there was a girl in every room.”
Why do you think we’ve only won 10 games in the past three years? We did have some fun, though.
