Notre Dame lands 'big' commitment
On Monday night, Notre Dame received a verbal commitment from the top-rated player in New York state, defensive tackle Jerron Jones from Aquinas Institute in Rochester, New York. Jones had earlier in the recruiting campaign made a commitment to Penn State, but withdrew that pledge after visiting Notre Dame earlier this summer.
Jones is rated as a 5-star prospect by Scout.com and a 4-star player by Rivals. Either way he is an outstanding talent. He was offered by some of the top football programs in the country including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Virginia Tech. He has great size (6-6, 300) and will line up at defensive end in the Irish’s 3-4 scheme.
Jones is the 14th commitment to Notre Dame’s 2012 recruiting class and the 2nd defensive line commit. The other is defensive tackle Sheldon Day, a 4-star player from powerhouse Warren Central in Indianapolis who made his commitment earlier in August.
