Your Week 5 Sunday NFL Preview

The last two weeks, I have been stuck in mediocrity going 2-2 each week. Batting .500 doesn’t cut it when it comes to making picks, so if I don’t pick it up today, this column could be out of business. Arizona (-3) at Detroit The Cardinals played poorly in their home loss to the rams last week. I think that was more an aberration than a trend, and they will be back on their game today. On paper, Detroit has a very good football team. They just aren’t playing up to their talent level. Playing at home, they will be looking to get something going, but I feel that Arizona will be too much for the Lions to overcome. Take the Cards, and give the points. Buffalo (-1) at Tennessee Buffalo has been very frustrating for me this year. They look great one week and very mediocre the next. If that trend continues, we are in luck, as this should be their “on” week. Tennessee has outplayed expectations and quarterback Marcus Mariota could be an early favorite for rookie of the year. That said, Bills coach Rex Ryan will give the young quarterback all he can handle with some exotic blitzes. I like the Bills to win in a close game. Chicago (+9) at Kansas City The Chiefs have to be one of the major disappointments of this young NFL season. They are 1-3 and struggling. On paper, they should be contending, but they haven’t been able to protect quarterback Alex Smith. Their defense has given up too many plays and haven’t been able to get after the opposing quarterback like they have in the past. Chicago is in a rebuild and has shown improvement, but they still are a long way away. That said, Jay Cutler has actually played well this year, and the game plans have been to control the clock and keep the defense off the field. While I feel the Chiefs will rebound and win this game, it will be closer than the nine point spread indicates. Take the points. Dallas at New England (-9) The Pats have had two weeks to prepare for this game and they are playing at home. Tom Brady seems to be on a mission this season and is off to his best start. Dallas is playing with a backup quarterback, and the defense has been disappointing to date this year. The D gets Greg Hardy back and that will help the pass rush, but it won’t be enough to stop Brady. Give the points and take the Pats. Follow Greg on Twitter @greggabe
