SQ College Football Power Rankings: Week 4

In case you missed it, Week 3 of the college football season brought a lot of excitement. Ohio State narrowly hung on against Northern Illinois, Ole Miss got the better of Nick Saban and Alabama for a second straight year, and Auburn finally collapsed against LSU. But where does that leave the rankings for this week? Find out below just in time for week four to begin.

1. Ohio State

Previous SQ Rank: 1

Coaches Poll Rank: 1

"The Buckeye offense is struggling in most facets, especially the offensive line and quarterback play. They still remain No. 1 because the defense is not only shutting down offenses, but also scoring points." - Nate Wallace

2. TCU

Previous SQ Rank: 3

Coaches Poll Rank: 2

"There's a lot of talk about who should've replaced Alabama as the No. 2 team in the country, but TCU deserves the spot for now. Putting up at least 56 points in consecutive weeks has this team looking like it did last season, and that's important given its struggle against Minnesota in Week 1." - Sean Berger

3. Michigan State

Previous SQ Rank: 4

Coaches Poll Rank: 3

"Michigan State has been playing solid football. They beat Air Force last week 35-21, and they beat a ranked Oregon team in Week 2." - Ray Boone

4. Ole Miss

Previous SQ Rank: 10

Coaches Poll Rank: 5

"The defense forced five turnovers from Alabama and the offense gained over 400 yards. Kelly and Ole Miss are for real." - Alex Koslow

5. Baylor

Previous SQ Rank: 5

Coaches Poll Rank: 4

"Baylor's offense gaining 754 yards a game is enough to keep this team in the top five." - Alex Koslow

6. Georgia

Previous SQ Rank: 7

Coaches Poll Rank: 6

"Greyson Lambert showed what he's capable of last week by completing 24 of 25 passes for 330 yards against South Carolina. Now the question is, can he perform consistently?" - Sean Berger

7. Notre Dame

Previous SQ Rank: 11

Coaches Poll Rank: 8

"The Irish defense held up against Georgia Tech's triple option. Will Fuller continues to impress (132. 3 receiving yards per game, five touchdowns)." - Alex Koslow

8. LSU

Previous SQ Rank: 13

Coaches Poll Rank: 9

"Leonard Fournette was dominant against Auburn and earned a top-10 spot this week. LSU will win many games this season if their defense continues to play well, Fournette runs wild, and Brandon Harris limits mistakes." - Nate Wallace

9. UCLA

Previous SQ Rank: 8

Coaches Poll Rank: 11

"Josh Rosen finally looked like the true freshman that he is against BYU (11-23, 106 yards, and three interceptions), and Myles Jack is lost for the rest of the season. I'm wondering how long UCLA can hold onto this top-10 spot." - Sean Berger

10. Florida State

Previous SQ Rank: 9

Coaches Poll Rank: 7

"FSU was mediocre last week against Boston College. The offense is struggling without former Heisman QB Jameis Winston." - Ray Boone

11. Clemson

Previous SQ Rank: 12

Coaches Poll Rank: 10

"Clemson's offense was only able to gain 41.1% of its available yards, but the defense held off Louisville. The Tigers' defense allowed the Cardinals to gain just 29.5% of its available yards, which was enough to escape with a 20-17 win." - Sean Berger

12. Alabama

Previous SQ Rank: 2

Coaches Poll Rank: 12

"The Crimson Tide committed five turnovers against Ole Miss and the defense couldn’t get a stop when they needed it most. Alabama falls in the rankings because of the loss and also because it's struggling to find other offensive weapons beside Derrick Henry; talented WR Calvin Ridley needs be a bigger part of Lane Kiffin’s gameplan." - Nate Wallace

13. Texas A&M

Previous SQ Rank: 17

Coaches Poll Rank: 15

"Texas A&M has gotten off to a hot start (averaging 46 points per game), but it also did the same last year before fizzling out. The Aggies take on an Arkansas team that's limping into this one after losses to Toledo and Texas Tech. Texas A&M may be favored by a touchdown right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if Arkansas keeps it closer than that." - Sean Berger

14. Oklahoma

Previous SQ Rank: 16

Coaches Poll Rank: 14

"Baker Mayfield is putting together a great season so far, as Bob Stoops has the Sooners playing solid.  The reason why Oklahoma didn’t move further up the polls is that the defense allowed 38 points to Tulsa." - Nate Wallace

15. Oregon

Previous SQ Rank: 15

Coaches Poll Rank: 13

"Beating up on Georgia State isn't going to impress anyone. With Adams injured, how good can the Ducks be?" - Alex Koslow

16. USC

Previous SQ Rank: 6

Coaches Poll Rank: 18

"USC's defense couldn't find a way to stop Stanford, as the Cardinal gained 71.5% of its available yards. That, coupled with allowing Stanford to convert on third down eight out of 12 times, is enough to make you look overrated." - Sean Berger

17. Arizona

Previous SQ Rank: 20

Coaches Poll Rank: 16

"Arizona leads the PAC-12 in scoring offense, averaging 54.3 points per game. But that's the result of playing UTSA, Nevada and Northern Arizona. It'll be interesting to see if the Wildcats get anywhere close to that against UCLA this week." - Sean Berger

18. Utah

Previous SQ Rank: 21

Coaches Poll Rank: 17

"Utah gets its first taste of PAC-12 play this week up in Eugene against Oregon. This game could either move Utah up into the top-15 or drop it straight out of the polls. So far the Utes have forced five interceptions, so I'm interested to see how many they can get against Oregon." - Sean Berger

19. Northwestern

Previous SQ Rank: 24

Coaches Poll Rank: 19

"After beating Stanford in Week 1, the Wildcats were far less impressive in their 19-10 win over Duke in Week 3." - Ray Boone

20. Georgia Tech

Previous SQ Rank: 14

Coaches Poll Rank: 20

"Georgia Tech's triple-option attack was stifled by Notre Dame, failing to put up 550 yards of total offense for the first time this season. It's not a 'bad' loss, but it's still one that Georgia Tech will wish it had back at the end of the season." - Sean Berger

21. Wisconsin

Previous SQ Rank: 23

Coaches Poll Rank: 21

"Outscoring last two opponents 86-3 is a good way to put Alabama loss behind you." - Alex Koslow

22. BYU

Previous SQ Rank: 19

Coaches Poll Rank: 27

"BYU QB Tanner Mangum couldn't summ on it in Week 3 after leading the team to two upsets in the previous weeks. The Cougars lost 24-23 to UCLA last week." - Ray Boone

23. Stanford

Previous SQ Rank: Not Ranked

Coaches Poll Rank: 24

"Fun fact: Stanford 4-0 since 2009 when being double-digit underdogs." - Alex Koslow

24. Oklahoma State

Previous SQ Rank: 25

Coaches Poll Rank: 22

"A 69-14 win over UT-San Antonio is enough to have a team optimistic going into game vs. Texas." - Alex Koslow

25. Mississippi State

Previous SQ Rank: Not Ranked

Coaches Poll Rank: 31

"Mississippi State took out its aggression on Northwestern State a week after narrowly losing to LSU, winning 62-13. This week's matchup against Auburn should be a fun one to watch. I like Mississippi State's chances due to Auburn's question mark at quarterback." - Sean Berger
