SQ College Football Power Rankings: Week 6

We're almost to the halfway point of the season and the rankings have already changed quite a bit. Florida and Michigan appear to be back and are charging hard up the rankings, but just how far have they moved up? Read below to find out where your team falls in our weekly SQ Power Rankings.

1. Ohio State

Previous SQ Rank: 1

Coaches Poll Rank: 1

"The Buckeyes committed too many turnovers and settled for too many field goals in the red zone against Indiana but they still remain number one because of Ezekiel Elliott (274 yards and 3 touchdowns)." - Nate Wallace

2. TCU

Previous SQ Rank: 4

Coaches Poll Rank: 2

"TCU moves up this week after demolishing the Texas Longhorns 50-7 in Week 5. After surrendering 52 points to Texas Tech in Week 4, the Horned Frogs’ defense was much better against the Longhorns, holding them to 313 total yards and a lone touchdown—although Texas ranks 107th nationally in total offense." - Ray Boone

3. Baylor

Previous SQ Rank: 6

Coaches Poll Rank: 4

"Baylor is really starting to make a case to be the top team in the country. The Bears have averaged 63 points per game on offense, while allowing opponents an average of 26. Any time you have an average margin of victory of that size, it's enough to draw plenty of attention." - Sean Berger

4. Utah

Previous SQ Rank: 10

Coaches Poll Rank: 7

"One of the best surprises of 2015, Utah has quickly risen to be one of the top-ranked teams in the country. The Utes' offense certainly has been great, but I'm more impressed with their defense, surrendering just 18.8 points per game so far. Beating Michigan and Oregon are very impressive early wins." - Sean Berger

5. Michigan State

Previous SQ Rank: 4

Coaches Poll Rank: 3

"This Spartans team has been uninspiring so far this season, and their play begs one to question why they are ranked No. 4 in the AP Poll. The Spartans barely beat a 1-4 Purdue team 24-21 in Week 5 and have yet to face a quality opponent. The Spartans have been especially underwhelming on offense, where they're ranked 59th nationally in points per game and 92nd overall in passing." - Ray Boone

6. Clemson

Previous SQ Rank: 13

Coaches Poll Rank: 6

"Beating a good Notre Dame team isn't easy. The rain made it interesting, but the Tigers defense stood tall, denying the game-tying two-point conversion attempt Notre Dame tried to muster." - Alex Koslow

7. LSU

Previous SQ Rank: 7

Coaches Poll Rank: 5

"LSU running back Leonard Fournette pounded his way into the record books in Week 5 after the Tigers beat Eastern Michigan 44-22. Fournette’s 233 yards on the ground made him the first running back in SEC history to rush for over 200 yards in three straight games—the Heisman chatter continues. In other news, the Tigers’ defense has been mediocre. They surrendered 24 points to Syracuse in Week 4 and 22 points to Eastern Michigan in Week 5—both vastly inferior opponents." - Ray Boone

8. Alabama

Previous SQ Rank: 12

Coaches Poll Rank: 10

"Derrick Henry got many more carries this week (26), and as a result, the Crimson Tide dominated Georgia and move up the rankings." - Nate Wallace

9. Texas A&M

Previous SQ Rank: 15

Coaches Poll Rank: 11

"Kyle Allen has been sensational in his first full season as a starter. In his past two games, he's thrown for 680 yards and four touchdowns, while completing two-thirds of his passes. It's easy to see why Texas A&M is off to such a hot start when you look at those numbers." - Sean Berger

10. Oklahoma

Previous SQ Rank: 14

Coaches Poll Rank: 9

"Oklahoma is getting mighty hot offensively behind star quarterback Baker Mayfield. The Sooners beat a solid West Virginia team 44-24 in Week 5 and have scored over 40 points four times this season (and 50 once). I attribute much of the Sooners’ success to the incredible play of Mayfield. This season, Mayfield has thrown for 1,382 yards, 13 touchdowns and only three interceptions. Mayfield also boasts a 178.5 passer rating—fifth in the country." - Ray Boone

11. Florida

Previous SQ Rank: 25

Coaches Poll Rank: 12

"Who would've thought that Florida would be inching toward the top-10 at the beginning of the season? Jim McElwain has the Gators looking like contenders after a comeback win over Tennessee and a dominating performance against Ole Miss last week. The team has outscored its SEC opponents 80-46 so far; not bad for a team that was supposed to struggle on this side of the ball." - Sean Berger

12. Northwestern

Previous SQ Rank: 17

Coaches Poll Rank: 14

"Northwestern has a defense you definitely do not want to face right now, allowing just seven points per game. However, they're playing Michigan this week, and are historically bad against the Wolverines, having lost nine of their last 10 meetings. This will undoubtedly be a defensive battle." - Sean Berger

13. Florida State

Previous SQ Rank: 11

Coaches Poll Rank: 8

"Florida State is 5-0 but remains completely mediocre. The Seminoles barely scraped by a 2-3 Wake Forest team 24-16 in Week 5." - Ray Boone

14. Ole Miss

Previous SQ Rank: 3

Coaches Poll Rank: 13

"Shockingly enough, Ole Miss was embarrassed last week 38-10 by a well-prepared Florida squad. Quarterback Chad Kelly, who had been having a stellar season till that point, was harassed all night by the Gators’ defensive line and looked rattled by an announced crowd of 90,585. The Gators exposed an Ole Miss offensive line that is suffering from the loss of tackle Laremy Tunsil. Mississippi gave up five sacks and only produced 69 yards on the ground, and had to settle for a field goal after a third quarter goal-line stand." - Ray Boone

15. Notre Dame

Previous SQ Rank: 8

Coaches Poll Rank: 15

"Just a 2 pt conversion away from overtime vs Clemson. The Irish started in a 14-0 hole early in the first, but outscored the Tigers 22-10 the rest of the game." - Alex Koslow

16. Stanford

Previous SQ Rank: 18

Coaches Poll Rank: 18

"After a slow start in Week 1, the Stanford Cardinal is rolling on offense. In the last four games, the Cardinal put up 31, 31, 24 and 55 points, respectively. Stanford boasts a solid offensive attack, averaging 209.8 rushing yards and 242.8 passing yards. In addition, their defense, ranked 31st overall, has been playing well." - Ray Boone

17. USC

Previous SQ Rank: 16

Coaches Poll Rank: 17

"USC could not get anything going against Washington this week, converting just one of 13 third down attempts. Cody Kessler threw two picks and was pressured all night long. USC might not be ranked come next week." - Sean Berger

18. Michigan

Previous SQ Rank: 23

Coaches Poll Rank: 21

"The Wolverines are improving each week, which makes them a dangerous squad. Ranking 2nd in the nation in total defense, the Wolverines offense will face another top 5 defense this week in Northwestern." - Nate Wallace

19. Georgia

Previous SQ Rank: 5

Coaches Poll Rank: 16

"The silver lining to Georgia's loss to Alabama was that Nick Chubb tied the school record by rushing for at least 100 yards in his 13th straight game. There's still plenty of time for the Bulldogs to make noise in the SEC as matchups with Tennessee, Mizzou and Florida await them in October." - Sean Berger

20. UCLA

Previous SQ Rank: 9

Coaches Poll Rank: 20

"He was shaky in Week 5, but I still love UCLA’s freshman quarterback Josh Rosen. Rosen connected on only 22 of his 40 passes for 280 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception in the Bruins’ 38-23 loss to Arizona State in Week 5. What’s really disappointing is the Bruins’ defense. The unit has given up over 30 points in each of the last two games." - Ray Boone

21. Oklahoma State

Previous SQ Rank: 19

Coaches Poll Rank: 19

"Two straight games when a game-winning field goal has been required either shows the Cowboys can fight through adversity, or they're just catching lucky breaks. Either way, this is a sneaky Big 12 team that's put up over 38 points per game, and has potential to get another quality win against West Virginia this week." - Sean Berger

22. California

Previous SQ Rank: 22

Coaches Poll Rank: 22

"This is the week we'll see just how good Cal really is, going up against Utah. Jared Goff can only do so much with his arm, so Cal's defense is going to have be able to withstand the brutal punch that Utah's offense brings. Cal has given up 96 points over its last three games, and that's not going to get it done this week." - Sean Berger

23. Iowa

Previous SQ Rank: Not Ranked

Coaches Poll Rank: 23

"Iowa beat Wisconsin 10-6 in Week 5. They have a mediocre offense (69th nationally) but have a very solid defense (ranked 18th nationally)." - Nate Wallace

24. Boise State

Previous SQ Rank: Not Ranked

Coaches Poll Rank: 24

"Offense is the name of the game at Boise State. The Broncos blasted the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 55-0 in Week 5 and have put up at least 50 points in each of the last three contests." - Ray Boone

25. Memphis

Previous SQ Rank: Not Ranked

Coaches Poll Rank: 25

"Last week was the first time that Memphis failed to score at least 44 points, but they still managed to beat South Florida, 24-17. This Memphis team has an electric offense led by dark horse Heisman candidate QB Paxton Lynch, who leads the American Athletic Conference in passing yards (1,535), touchdown passes (10) and passer efficiency (181.47). We'll find out just how good this team is next week when Ole Miss comes to town." - Sean Berger
