Vikings to add Matt Blair to Ring of Honor

There has been a movement in Minnesota for some time to have former Vikings linebacker Matt Blair considered for the Hall of Fame.

Now, six-time Pro Bowl performer will be honored by the team.

The Vikings announced today that Blair will become the 20th individual to be inducted into the club’s Ring of Honor at halftime of the Oct. 25 game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Blair played on two Super Bowl teams and ranks second in franchise history with 1,452 tackles.

“Ring of Honor, I think is something that is very special,” Blair said. “On my mind? Oh yeah, it’s on your mind and I know that there will be a time where there is a chance, and this is my chance and I’m honored to be a part of it.”

Was it a goal of his?

“When I wrote down goals that I wanted to do, before I retired I wanted to buy season tickets,” Blair said. “I bought eight tickets and I let my friends go. I said, when I retire I want to go sit and watch the game, and I did. It was something I wanted to do, sit there and be a part of it. It was something that was awesome and I am a fan now because you know why, I’ve been to two Super Bowls, the Vikings have been to four. I’m a fan because I want to cheer these guys on so we can win a Super Bowl. With the chances we’ve had and after you play the game and you lose, you want to win. I’m cheering these guys on and trying to help them out as much as I can.”

Now, he’ll be able to go to games and see his name in the stadium with other greats in Vikings history.

Ravens' Pitta has broken hand

Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta broke his hand and will likely require surgery, according to the Carroll County Times.

Pitta will require surgery, but should be back in time for the Ravens' regular season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

“It looks like he broke his hand,” John Harbaugh said. “It looks like he'll have to repair it in some form or fashion.”

Pitta caught 40 passes for 405 yards and three scores last year.

Penn State suffers its first official transfer

Penn State has suffered its first official defection from its 2012 roster, as Tim Buckley decided Monday to return home and play at N.C. State.

The safety from Raleigh, who was listed as a backup on the Nittany Lions' depth chart, will have four years of eligibility remaining after walking on at Penn State, where he eventually netted a scholarship. He will be on scholarship with the Wolfpack as well.

The 6-foot, 202-pounder, who starred as a running back and was recruited by N.C. State out of high school, will be able to play immediately. He'll add depth to a secondary that returns all four starters, including safeties Earl Wolff and Brandon Bishop.

N.C. State begins practice for the 2012 season on Tuesday.

Of course, Nittany Lions head coach Bill O'Brien is still unsure how his roster will shape out this fall, as running back Silas Redd has been wooed by USC and could decide to become a Trojan at any time, while backup quarterback Rob Bolden could be headed to LSU.

Notre Dame lands bruising Class of 2013 running back

Jamel James, a Class of 2013 running back from football-rich Texas, will bring a physical presence to the Notre Dame backfield when he steps onto campus in South Bend.

Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly and his staff received a verbal pledge from the bruising runner over the weekend, and the former Arkansas commit will fill a similar role to that of former power backs Robert Hughes and Jonas Gray and help complement the Fighting Irish's spread passing attack.

The 5-11, 220-pound Cinco Ranch High School product (Katy, Texas) produces best between the tackles and will not go down often after initial contact. He has deceptive speed as well, which makes him a real good “get” for Kelly and his staff, especially after the Irish lost out on Ty Isaac and Ryan Green.

James became Notre Dame's 18th commitment in the 2013 class. The running back also held offers from major powers such as Florida State, LSU and West Virginia.

Moreno cleared for full team drills

Knowshon Moreno has been cleared to return to full team drills for the Denver Broncos, according to the Denver Post.

Moreno had surgery to repair a torn ACL on Dec. 1 and had been limited to just 7 on 7 non-contact drills through the early portion of training camp. Despite being cleared for full contact, Moreno isn't ready to say he is full go just yet.

“Every day I just want to try to do more, do more team things, get in there with the ones and get used to the speed again. Today was definitely a good day for that,” Moreno said. “I'm not full go yet, but I'm getting closer.”

Chargers to sign QB O'Connell

The San Diego Chargers have found a new backup quarterback, says the North County Times.

Kevin O'Connell, who was a third-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2008 and since has had cups of coffee at three other NFL stops, will sign with the Chargers to replace Kyle Boller, who retired one day after signing with the team. O'Connell played college football at nearby San Diego State.

Boller had been signed because Charlie Whitehurst had suffered a knee injury early in training camp, and the Chargers needed a veteran backup to fill in behind starter Philip Rivers.

Big East Media Days preview

Big East Media Days take place today and Tuesday in Newport, R.I. as we continue to get closer to the start of the 2012 season.

Pittsburgh running back Ray Graham, Rutgers linebacker Khaseem Greene and South Florida quarterback B.J. Daniels will be among the big names in attendance, but unfortunately stars such as Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and Cincinnati signal-caller Munchie Legaux will not be in Newport.

While not much major news is likely to come out of Media Days, let's take a look at some of the biggest storylines that we should watch as Big East teams prepare for their impending preseason camps.

Joe BaileyJoe Bailey will likely field questions about the league's impending TV deal at Media Days.

Commissioner Joe Bailey's address: If you have never heard of Bailey, you likely aren't alone. The commissioner is now the face of a beaten-down league, but he will put a positive spin on things despite the impending losses of Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the ACC next offseason. Keep in mind that neither the Panthers nor Orange had reps at the Big East spring meetings, so there could be some awkwardness in Newport. Bailey will pump up the conference's incoming members, including Boise State, SMU and Memphis. But with national media in town, Bailey has to sell the league, no matter how different it may look in 2013. The good news is that the league will begin television negotiations in September, so new money will be coming in. The question is how much the league can get after so much remodeling.

The impending new TV deal: Speaking of the television negotiations, reps from all of the major TV networks that want a piece of the Big East will be in town just as they were in 2011. But they will obviously be bidding on a new-look Big East this fall, and the league now is in a tough spot. How much more (or less) attractive is it compared to last year when it turned down a deal from ESPN?

Division alignment: League members are expected to decide on how they want to align the new divisions for 2013 when Boise State, Houston, Memphis, San Diego State, SMU and Central Florida enter the fold. There are currently three models under consideration: North/South, East/West or a non-geographic format that would be balanced, perhaps on past records.

Playoff talk: Of course, Bailey, senior associate commissioner Nick Carparelli and all of the head coaches will be asked about the impending four-team playoff, which is slated to begin in 2014. While most everyone is happy that the postseason format has been tweaked, keep in mind that the Big East is losing its guaranteed access point to a major bowl. Remember that 8-4 UConn team that went to the Fiesta Bowl two years ago? Or the West Virginia team that underachieved in the regular season but played in the Orange Bowl last year? Those instances will not occur moving forward with the new postseason format.

The media poll: It will be interesting to see how the preseason media poll plays out. Every season the Big East becomes tougher and tougher to project because no team really ever stands out, and that looks to be the case once again in 2012. USF seems to be the favorite based on most I have talked to, with Louisville in the mix as well. I am leaning toward Rutgers despite having a new head coach. But the Scarlet Knights' quarterback play concerns me.

Titans WR Murdoch dead in apparent suicide

Tennessee Titans wide receiver O.J. Murdoch died Monday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Tampa Police confirmed Murdoch's death at 10:43 a.m. on Monday after discovering his body at 8:30 a.m.EDT in the high school parking lot of Middleton High School, where he starred as a prep player.

Murdoch, 25, never reported to the Titans training camp this year, and Coach Mike Munchak indicated he was dealing with a “personal issue.” However, the team had expected him to report soon.

Murdoch came to Tennessee in 2011 as an undrafted free agent and spent last year on injured reserve after tearing his Achilles tendon in training camp.

He began his college career at South Carolina, but was dismissed from the squad and finished at Division II Fort Hays State.

Packers TE Jermichael Finley back at practice

Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley has returned to practice after sitting out several days following what his wife described on Twitter was a mild concussion.

Jason Wilde of ESPN Milwaukee reports Finley was participating in practice this morning but that he has been held out of full 11-on-11 work. That makes sense. The Packers will work him in slowly as he comes back. The hope, of course, is that he doesn’t ding his head again.

Wide receiver Greg Jennings remains on the sideline with an elbow issue.

Bills' Nelson to miss 4-5 days of practice

Buffalo Bills receiver David Nelson will miss about four or five days of practice after injuring his knee in Saturday's practice.

“It's nothing serious. No long-term damage. The way it looked on film, the way it felt on the field, I'm very lucky to have the diagnosis I got,” Nelson told the Buffalo News.

Nelson made contact with defensive end Mario Williams, then got the leg rolled up on. He said he feared the worst when it happened.

“When it first happened, I thought it was blown,” he said. “… You see that happen a lot, so I thought I was done. Coming in, we did some different testing on it, and it all came back negative, so that's a positive sign and I should be back in a few days.”
