N.C. State vs. Tennessee: 3 things to watch

North Carolina State and Tennessee meet in an ACC-SEC showdown Friday night in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff at the Georgia Dome.

Tom O'Brien's Wolfpack could be a darkhorse ACC contender, while Derek Dooley enters a make-or-break 2012 campaign with the Vols.

Let's take a look at three things to watch in the clash between the Wolfpack and the Vols on Friday evening.

Mike GlennonUS PRESSWIREMike Glennon is rising up NFL Draft boards.

1. These QBs are pros: We'll get a chance to see two of the best quarterbacks in the country match up at the Georgia Dome, with the Wolfpack's Mike Glennon and the Vols' Tyler Bray likely to be high NFL Draft picks. The senior Glennon threw 31 touchdown passes last year, which were the second-most in N.C. State history behind the 34 thrown by Philip Rivers in 2003. He'll have speedy Tobais Palmer and freshman Charlie Hegedus as well as redshirt freshmen Hakeem Flowers and Maurice Morgan as his top receiver targets. But Bryan Underwood's injury is a tough blow. Meanwhile, the junior Bray is a tall, lanky pocket passer who can also make throws on the run. Losing Da'Rick Rogers was a big blow to this team, but Justin Hunter and junior college transfer Cordarrelle Patterson give Bray quality options to make plays through the air.

2. Hit the ground running: As prolific as the Tennessee passing game could be this fall, this team will struggle to make a bowl game if the rushing attack is subpar once again. The Vols ranked 116th nationally in rushing while recording just 11 touchdowns on the ground in 2011, but Rajion Neal and a host of running backs should be able to provide a consistent rushing attack after a strong offseason. And a veteran offensive line will help. Meanwhile, the Wolfpack need a lead back to emerge to improve on a rushing attack that ranked No. 109 in the country last fall. An experienced offensive line will help, but sophomore Tony Creecy must be able to carry over his impressive offseason work onto the field. O'Brien named Creecy the No. 1 back over senior James Washington and sophomore Mustafa Greene with a consistent performance. He was N.C. State's second-leading rusher last year with 382 yards on 103 carries. Washington led the team with 897 yards on 226 carries in 2011, while Greene recorded 597 yards on 134 carries as a true freshman in 2010 but missed last season with an injury. Expect all three backs to get carries, but whoever is on the field needs to keep defenses honest so Glennon can make plays through the air.

3. Amerson vs. Hunter: The Wolfpack's secondary is one of the best in the nation, led by junior cornerback David Amerson, who led the nation and set an ACC record with 13 interceptions in 2011. Expect to see him lined up pretty consistently against Vols star receiver Justin Hunter. The Wolfpack, however, apparently will be without No. 2 cornerback C.J. Wilson because of an unspecified eligibility issue. Wilson has yet to be cleared by the NCAA. The loss of Da'Rick Rogers may have tilted the advantage in this contest to the Wolfpack's secondary, but losing Wilson may have evened the score despite N.C. State's experience at safety.

Ravens' Upshaw reinjures shoulder

Rookie linebacker Courtney Upshaw will have an MRI on his right shoulder after reinjuring it Thursday night against the Baltimore Ravens, says the Baltimore Sun.

Upshaw's injury has Ravens coach John Harbaugh concerned.

The Ravens are already without Terrell Suggs, who suffered an Achilles injury in the off-season, and Baltimore was banking on the second-round pick to help offset that loss. Upshaw has had his struggles making an impact in preseason, however.

Texans' Butler lost for season

Houston Texans offensive tackle Rashad Butler will miss the entire season after suffering a torn triceps in his right arm Thursday night against the Minnesota Vikings.

Butler has been down this road before, as he missed 14 games last year with a torn triceps in his left arm.

“He’s finished; out for the year,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak told the team website. “(It's) unfortunate. Tough, tough deal.”

It has been a bad week for Butler, who lost out in the running for the starting left tackle job to Derrick Newton on Monday.

Cowboys swing deal for Ryan Cook

The Dallas Cowboys were hit hard with injuries at center during training camp and they’ve made a move to ensure there is adequate cover during the regular season.

The Cowboys have traded a late-round draft pick to the Miami Dolphins to acquire veteran interior offensive lineman Ryan Cook, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

The Cowboys saw Cook in-person during the exhibition finale Wednesday night and they’ve made the deal. The hope is that a back issue that has been plaguing starter Phil Costa will not be a long-term problem.

Cook is a former second-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings. He has 40 career starts and has even appeared at tackle.

Dolphins deal lineman Cook to Cowboys

The Miami Dolphins have shipped offensive lineman Ryan Cook to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a seventh-round pick, says ESPN's John Clayton.

The Cowboys have had some issues with their offensive line, and Cook offers versatility in being able to play multiple positions along the offensive front.

Man falls to his death at Texans game

A fan attending the Houston Texans preseason finale against the Minnesota Vikings fell to his death due to apparently horseplay on an escalator, reports KHOU-TV Channel 11 in Houston.

According to witnesses, the man was attempting to slide down the rails of an escalator when he fell. He was taken to a local hospital but died due to the fall from one of the highest levels of the stadium.

Sports Radio 610's website reported that the man was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the fall.

Playbook: Looking at the 'Cross Country Dagger'

Click here for the entire Inside the Playbook series.

Click here for my breakdown of the NFL route tree.

Earlier this week, I broke down the Cowboys’ “Yankee” route on video. A 2-Man concept (with max-protection) designed to put stress on the FS in the middle of the field (think Cover 1, Cover 3, Zone Pressure).

Today, let’s take a look at another Dallas route scheme: the “Cross Country Dagger.” Check out the playbook diagram and then we will get into some coaching points…

Offensive Personnel: Regular (2WR-1TE-2RB)
Formation: Weak I Slot “Exchange”
Route: Cross Country Dagger
Defensive Scheme: Cover 2

Playbook

– Why 7-Man protection? Think deep, vertical concepts here. With the TE (Y) staying in and the FB sealing the edge to the open side of the formation, the QB has time for the route to develop down the field. The RB (R) on the swing route plays out as a “check down” option.

– A quick coaching point on alignments: look at the “Z” receiver. This is called a “Slot Exchange” formation (No.2 on the ball). That is a pre-snap defensive alert for the “Dagger” concept (Z clear out, X on the dig).

– The base principles of the “Dagger” vs. Cover 2 are to push the Mike Backer (M) vertically down the field and work the dig route back between the numbers in the now vacated zone. If the two underneath “seam-hook” defenders (Sam and Will in a base 4-3 front) don’t get enough depth, the dig becomes an easy read for the QB.

– With the Z running the post (“Cross Country”) the offense is trying to put stress on the closed side safety (SS) in Cover 2. Here I have the TE staying in on protection, however you can run a closed side 7 (corner) route and force the SS to play two (Y and Z) in the deep half.

Britt calls one-game ban 'a gift from God'

Kenny Britt called his one-game suspension by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell “a gift from God" Thursday night following the Tennessee Titans preseason game.

Britt said he is glad the matter is finally resolved. Many were expecting a longer suspension for a player who has had eight run-ins with police since the Titans drafted him in 2009.

“Actually, it's a gift from God that it's only one week. I'm just happy that God spoke to him (Goodell) and put the right thing in his heart and I'll move forward. It's definitely a relief,” Britt said.

Titans general manager Ruston Webster seemed relieved as well, telling TitanInsider.com, ““One game is one game too many, and Kenny knows that, but it's nice to have it behind us.”

Britt suspended for one game

Kenny Britt managed to get off fairly light with only a one-game suspension from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for his DUI arrest on July 20 at Fort Campbell, Ky., according to TitanInsider.com

Britt will miss the Tennessee Titans season opener on Sept. 9 against the New England Patriots, but that is relatively minor given that it was the receiver's eighth run-in with law enforcement since the club drafted him in 2009.

Britt is recovering from three knee procedures since tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee last September. He would only have been available for about 15 snaps total as he recovers from scopes in May on the right knee and June on his left knee.
