John Abraham was found passed out in car

On Tuesday, it was revealed that Cardinals defensive end John Abraham had been arrested and charged with DUI in Atlanta during the late afternoon of June 29.

Now, ESPN.com is reporting more details of the incident.

According to the report, Abraham was found passed out in his car at an intersection in suburban Atlanta after leaving the Pink Pony strip club. He failed the field sobriety tests after telling officers that he had two drinks but didn't feel safe to drive.

In addition, Abraham was driving on a suspended license.

Abraham will surely be subjected to the NFL's personal conduct and substance-abuse policies as a result of this. He's had a previous DUI before when he was with the Jets, so a suspension could be possible.

Follow me on Twitter: @JasonHButt

Lamar Miller to be used like LeSean McCoy

Could Lamar Miller be this year's LeSean McCoy?

The Miami Dolphins sure hope so as Miller appears to be posited for that kind of role in their offense. With Bill Lazor, formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles as a quarterbacks coach, filling the offensive coordinator role with the Dolphins, Miller has been practicing in the manner McCoy was used a season ago.

On top of that, according to the Miami Herald, Miller has gained strength and kept his speed for the upcoming season, which could make him a potential surprise as September nears.

"He looks good, he looks stronger than he's ever been," Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said. "I don't think he's sacrificed any speed whatsoever."

One reason Miller has been given this opportunity is due to Knowshon Moreno's knee issue, which required arthroscopic surgery this offseason. On top of that, Miller was already ahead of the former Bronco on the depth chart during offseason activities.

Miller did not have the kind of season many expected of him a year ago, averaging just 4.0 yards per carry. If Lazor's fast-paced offense can click with this unit, then Miller could be a potential breakout candidate in 2014.

Follow me on Twitter: @JasonHButt

Seahawks signed Terrell Thomas, Randall Carroll

Beside signing offensive tackle Eric Winston, the Seattle Seahawks have signed veteran cornerback Terrell Thomas and wide receiver Randall Carroll.

The Seahawks placed wide receiver Taylor Price on injured reserve. Cornerback Chandler Fenner and offensive guard Bronson Irwin were released.

Thomas played for Pete Carroll at USC. He's a former New York Giants second-round draft pick.

In 2010, he had 101 tackles and five interceptions. Knee injuries have affected him in recent years.

“I’m so thankful for the Seattle Seahawks giving me an opportunity to continue my dream,” Thomas wrote on Twitter. "Can't wait to hit the field with my new teammates.”

Carroll was previously with the Minnesota Vikings. He played at Sul Ross State and UCLA.

Follow me on Twitter: @RavensInsider

Aaron Wilson covers the Ravens for The Baltimore Sun.

Patriots claimed injured Tyler Gaffney off Panthers waivers

The New England Patriots claimed rookie running back Tyler Gaffney off waivers from the Carolina Panthers, a somewhat surprising move considering that the sixth-round draft pick from Stanford is scheduled to undergo-season ending knee surgery.

Gaffney has a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee.

Gaffney was scheduled to go on injured reserve after being paid a $96,000 signing bonus.

“The bottom line is Tyler’s injury is a season-ender," Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman told the Charlotte Observer. "It’s not a little tear that could be scoped and he’d be back in three weeks. This was a legitimate, season-ending injury. We have Jonathan Stewart, who’s not practicing, and we needed the roster spot. Plain and simple.”

This is similar to when the Patriots claimed injured New York Giants tight end Jake Ballard.

“This is a very competitive business, and people are going to try to improve their team within the rules,” Gettleman said. “And this is within the rules.”

When asked if he's angry about it, Gettleman replied: "It's a business."

Follow me on Twitter: @RavensInsider

Aaron Wilson covers the Ravens for The Baltimore Sun

2014 Big Ten Media Days notebook

The Boilermakers were 0-8 in conference play last season, but the second-year head coach said his players are more confident and the program has made "significant strides" from year one to year two heading into the new campaign. Hazell isn't going anywhere, but progress needs to be made in West Lafayette.

US PRESSWIREGary Andersen and the Badgers will face LSU in their season opener.

— There's no doubt that Wisconsin has a chance to be highly ranked by the end of the season because of the team's less-than-daunting schedule, which head coach Gary Andersen stated is "very challenging." Well, the truth is that it's not really difficult. The Badgers have a tough challenge in Week 1 in Texas against LSU, but the rest of the slate is very manageable even with a rebuilt front seven and questions at quarterback, where Joel Stave and Tanner McEvoy will initially split the reps at QB in camp. Andersen has put "no timeline" on naming a starter. While I believe Stave would start if the season began today, McEvoy is the dual-threat who could diversify the offense a bit more.

— Wisconsin is not the only team that has a manageable slate, as Iowa has a chance to enter November unscathed if it can get past Iowa State and Pittsburgh in nonconference play. If the Hawkeyes get good enough quarterback play, which is the question in Madison as well, the Big Ten could have a nice national presence by the end of the year. Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz said Jake Rudock has more confidence and has all of the intangibles to be a successful quarterback.

— Illinois head coach Tim Beckman said that former top in-state recruit Aaron Bailey will remain at quarterback and not switch positions. Oklahoma State transfer Wes Lunt is going to be the starter in Week 1 despite not having officially won the job yet, but Bailey has a bright future. Will he line up at various spots this fall if Lunt is the starter under center? On defense, eighteen of 22 defenders from last year's two-deep are back this year. Is that a good or a bad thing? Beckman said tremendous strides need to occur on that side of the ball.

— Michigan head coach Brady Hoke said new coordinator Doug Nussmeier has done a tremendous job since his arrival, and the team's offense will tell the tale of whether the Wolverines can once again be a Big Ten contender. "The only pressure is every day preparing those guys for life after football," Hoke said, when asked if he is feeling the heat entering the new season.

— Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood said he believes the school's affiliation with its new conference will be a "tremendous marriage," and he noted that the recruiting footprint for the program has expanded a bit since the news of the move to the Big Ten. Maryland head man Randy Edsall echoed the recruiting sentiments of Flood. But will either the Scarlet Knights or Terps be able to compete immediately in the tough East division? Flood said QB Gary Nova has really taken to what new OC Ralph Friedgen is teaching. Consistency has been Nova's biggest issue throughout his career. Meanwhile, the Terps have one of the nation's most exciting players in receiver Stefon Diggs, who caught 34 passes for 587 yards and three touchdowns before his injury last season.

— Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said star dual-threat QB Braxton Miller is in the best shape of his life, and Miller later confirmed those words to reporters. Miller has been banged-up a lot in the past, so the Heisman Trophy contender should be the most prepared he's ever been to carry a lot of the load in Meyer's Power Spread scheme. Also keep an eye on Dontre Wilson, whom Meyer said will be an "impact guy" in a lot of ways. There has been a lot of offseason buzz for the talented hybrid athlete. Defensively, Meyer praised the work of Chris Ash, whose priority as new DC has been fixing the pass defense woes from last year.

— Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio on what keeps the fire burning in the rivalry with the Wolverines: "I continue to live in Michigan. That ought to do it." Okay then. Meanwhile, expect the Spartans to have another dynamite season despite some key losses on defense. They still have Pat Narduzzi running that unit, and he's one of the top coordinators in the country.

— Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini, when discussing his sometimes demonstrative nature on the sideline: "I'm not that intense, competitive animal all the time." He said he's laid back off the field and trying to show that more on the sideline. Yeah, I don't buy it either. But I am buying the Huskers' defense, which should be consistent and strong enough to help Pelini get past his four-loss hex in Lincoln.

— James Franklin is going to own State College. He also inherited a quarterback in sophomore Christian Hackenberg, who could ultimately be the top overall pick in a future NFL Draft. Franklin said he's impressed by Hackenberg's hunger to learn and his humility, but the focus is on developing help around him.

And…

In regards to Bob Bowlsby's comments at Big 12 Media Days, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said that the major five conferences need to get together over the next year to eighteen months to achieve a new model for compliance and enforcement. Delany also said that he expects autonomy to pass in August and believes the desires of the major conferences will be met … Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald compared QB Trevor Siemian's personality to that of country music star Luke Bryan (laid-back if you're not familiar with the country music scene) … Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill said he's well aware of the team's losing streak to Wisconsin … Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson believes the Hoosiers will be "significantly better" on defense this fall.

Dave Miller, the college football editor for the National Football Post, is on Twitter @Miller_Dave.

Eric Winston joins Seahawks

Veteran NFL offensive tackle Eric Winston has signed with the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

"Season finally starts for me today!" Winston wrote on his Twitter account. "Looking forward to chasing a ring with the Seahawks!! Time go to work!

The president of the NFL Players Association has started 119 career games in eight seasons.

He has played for the Arizona Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans.

Winston, 30, didn't grade out highly last season for the Cardinals.

He has started every game for seven consecutive seasons, though.

Winston could provide a proven veteran presence for the Seahawks.

Follow me on Twitter: @RavensInsider

Aaron Wilson covers the Ravens for The Baltimore Sun

Camp diaries: Chicago Bears

One interesting observation I made while attending the Chicago Bears’ training camp on Monday was that former Carolina Panther Jimmy Clausen was running ahead of Jordan Palmer in the quarterback rotation during practice. Does this mean that Clausen is the favorite for the backup quarterback job in Chicago? No, it simply means that Clausen got more reps on Monday.

While in Carolina, Clausen struggled with his decision making and had that proverbial “deer in the headlights” look in game situations. That was not evident in practice on Monday. Clausen looked poised, was able to go through his progressions and consistently made good decisions.

ICONFormer Panther Jimmy Clausen looks to catch on in Chicago.

In the two minute drill that concludes practice, Clausen led the second unit to a touchdown in four plays, completing every throw including a touchdown pass. Palmer, on the other hand, looked indecisive with his decision making. He was slow finding an open receiver and often just threw to a check down.

Rookie David Fales looked good. He made quick decisions, got the ball out of his hand quickly and was accurate. Being that Monday was only the second day in pads, it’s still way too early to say that Fales will challenge for the backup quarterback job. But Monday’s practice sure didn’t hurt his chances.

Checking in with the backfield

Obviously, Matt Forte has a firm hold on the starting running back jog. But the question is who will serve as Forte’s primary backup? Second-year man Michael Ford has good run skills and can catch the ball out of the backfield. The concerns about him are whether or not he can pass block and produce on special teams. We won’t find out about that until the pre- season games start in another ten days.

The same holds true for draft choice Ka’Deem Carey. On Monday, Carey was quick to the hole and made some nice cuts. He also caught the ball very well and was able to get up field quickly after the catch. As with Ford, Carey is going to have to prove he can be trusted in pass protection during the pre-season games.

The receiving unit

Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery are clearly the top two receivers. The question that has to be answered in camp is who will serve as the third receiver? Through the first part of camp, second-year man Marquess Wilson is the favorite. Wilson added strength in the off-season and looks to have improved his route running. He catches the ball cleanly and has good run after catch skills. At over 6’3”, Wilson gives the Bears another big target to line up with Marshall and Jeffery.

Two others who jumped out at me were former Canadian league star Chris Williams and veteran Eric Weems. Williams doesn’t have much size, but he is both quick and fast and finds a way to get open. He has also caught the ball very well in camp.

Weems doesn’t have the speed and quickness that Williams has, but Jay Cutler seems to have confidence in him, as he threw Weems a number of passes during team work on Monday.

In the trenches

Houston notched 6.0 sacks with the Raiders last season.

This might be the most talented Chicago defensive line I have seen in years, as all the new free agents jumped out at me. Lamarr Houston is a lean 280 pounds with a quick first step. He plays the game with an aggressive attitude.

Former Detroit Lion Willie Young has very quick hands and an explosive punch. He shows a consistent ability to jolt the blocker with his punch. With his length, Young seldom lets the blocker into his body.

Jared Allen was impressive with his initial quickness, fast hands and redirect skills. Like Young, Allen does an excellent job keeping blockers off his body.

The two defensive line draft choices also stood out. Ego Ferguson is a load inside. He is strong and powerful and consistently gets penetration to disrupt. Will Sutton has a quick first step, stays low and uses his hands well for a rookie.

If practice is a good indicator, the Bears have eight players they can use in a defensive line rotation. That will only help their performance, as key players will get ample opportunity to rest and stay fresh.

Follow Greg on Twitter: @greggabe

Andre Johnson strained right hamstring

Houston Texans star wide receiver Andre Johnson strained his right hamstring.

“I just got a little tight, it was just a precaution,” Johnson said. “We’re going to go in and see what’s what. Just from the feeling of it, it’s not anything bad.”

Texans coach Bill O'Brien described the injury as minor.

Johnson missed the Texans' offseason program as he was disgruntled with the direction of the franchise.

Now, he's back, but slightly injured.

Follow me on Twitter: @RavensInsider

Aaron Wilson covers the Ravens for The Baltimore Sun

Colts cut Aaron Burks

The Indianapolis Colts have cut wide receiver Aaron Burks.

Burks was signed in July.

He was previously with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Burks played collegiately at Boise State.

In four seasons, he caught 47 passes for 743 yards and four touchdowns.

Follow me on Twitter: @RavensInsider

Aaron Wilson covers the Ravens for The Baltimore Sun
