Panthers CB Donte Jackson (groin) out for season

The Carolina Panthers placed cornerback Donte Jackson on injured reserve Tuesday, ending his season.

The move marks the second straight day that the Panthers shuffled a starter to season-ending injured reserve. They placed star running back Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve Monday with an ailing ankle.

Jackson, 26, sustained a groin injury during Carolina’s 33-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. An MRI the following day revealed the extent of the injury for Jackson, who will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Jackson recorded 61 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble in 12 games this season for the Panthers, who also have fellow cornerbacks Stephon Gilmore, A.J. Bouye, Rashaan Melvin, C.J. Henderson and Keith Taylor Jr. on the roster.

Also on Tuesday, the Panthers activated rookie guard Deonte Brown. He had been designated to return from injured reserve after being sidelined with a knee issue.

Notre Dame AD: Brian Kelly didn’t give chance to match offer

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said Tuesday that outgoing coach Brian Kelly didn’t give him a chance to match the offer that he accepted at LSU, adding that Kelly won’t coach the Irish in their bowl game.

Kelly was officially named as LSU’s new head coach Tuesday.

Swarbrick said he feels “less of a need to have a designated interim” but will designate someone on the staff to make head-coaching decisions as the Irish prepare for a possible College Football Playoff appearance. At worst, Notre Dame will play in a top New Year’s Day bowl game.

“I have every confidence we will be fully prepared for what I hope is a CFP game,” Swarbrick said. “Brian will not be a part of that for us.”

Regardless, any interim would not be a candidate for the permanent job, he said.

Notre Dame sits 11-1 and was No. 6 in the CFP rankings last week. However, the Irish could move into the top four after No. 2 Ohio State’s loss last week.

Swarbrick said he sensed a “certain restlessness” in Kelly the past few weeks, saying “it felt like somebody who might be open to a different opportunity,” including Kelly making “Freudian slips.”

Swarbrick also said he did not speak with Kelly until after the news broke Monday night.

“He did not discuss with me the conversations he had with other universities,” Swarbrick said. “We are always talking about the program’s needs. There was nothing identified at any time that was something we could not meet.”

Swarbrick said he has not reached out to any potential candidates yet, and said it’s about the right fit. He will not utilize a search firm. He also said he does not keep a list of potential candidates, instead plans to build characteristics of the next head coach.

Swarbrick’s comments come in the aftermath of a messy exodus by Kelly, who texted his team late Monday night only after media reports came out that he was heading to LSU.

“I will have more to share when we meet tomorrow at 7 a.m. but for now, just know that my love for you is limitless and I am so proud of all that you have accomplished,” Kelly’s message read, per The Athletic. “Our program is elite because of your hard work and commitment and I know that will continue. I will share more in the morning when we meet. Again, my sincere apologies for not being able to be the one to share the news directly with you.”

Further, The Athletic reported that Kelly ghosted his assistant coaches, some of whom were on recruiting trips.

Kelly reportedly met with his team Tuesday morning and left after roughly 11 minutes. According to the LSU press release, Kelly was flying to Baton Rouge on Tuesday afternoon.

Kelly, 60, became the winningest coach in Notre Dame history earlier this season, passing Knute Rockne, and won 113 of 153 games in 12 years at Notre Dame. He took the Fighting Irish to the College Football Playoff twice.

LSU names Brian Kelly as head coach with 10-year deal

LSU and Brian Kelly made their partnership official with a 10-year deal worth $95 million plus incentives, the Tigers announced Tuesday.

The former Notre Dame coach will be introduced at a press conference at noon local time Wednesday.

“I could not be more excited to join a program with the commitment to excellence, rich traditions, and unrivaled pride and passion of LSU Football,” Kelly said in a release. “I am fully committed to recruiting, developing, and graduating elite student-athletes, winning championships, and working together with our administration to make Louisiana proud. Our potential is unlimited, and I cannot wait to call Baton Rouge home.”

Kelly, 60, became the winningest coach in Notre Dame history earlier this season, passing Knute Rockne, and won 113 of 153 games in 12 years at Notre Dame after previously coaching Central Michigan and Cincinnati. He took the Fighting Irish to the College Football Playoff twice.

Kelly’s official record at Notre Dame is 92-39 due to wins vacated because of NCAA sanctions. He went 19-16 at Central Michigan and 34-6 at Cincinnati.

“Brian Kelly is the epitome of a winner,” LSU director of athletics Scott Woodward said in the release. “He has built and sustained success at every program he’s led, from multiple undefeated regular seasons and National Coach of the Year honors to national titles and College Football Playoff berths. His credentials and consistency speak for themselves.”

Kelly replaces Ed Orgeron, who led LSU to a national title two years ago. LSU and Orgeron agreed in October that they would part ways after the season. The Tigers finished the regular season 6-6, including an upset of then-No. 15 Texas A&M, to become bowl-eligible.

Reports: Va. Tech close to naming Brent Pry new coach

Virginia Tech is nearing a deal to name Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry as its next head coach, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.

An official announcement could come later Tuesday, per the reports.

Pry, 51, has spent the past six seasons as the Nittany Lions’ defensive coordinator and prior to that, served three seasons in the same position at Vanderbilt and one at Georgia Southern.

Penn State is ranked seventh in scoring defense this season, allowing 16.8 points per game.

Virginia Tech parted ways with coach Justin Fuente on Nov. 16. Fuente’s teams posted a 43-31 mark in six seasons.

Pry served as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech in the mid-1990s in the early days of his 30-year coaching career.

The Hokies finished 6-6 after beating Virginia, 29-24, last week. Defensive line coach J.C. Price will serve as interim coach in their bowl game.

Washington holds off Seahawks’ late comeback attempt

J.D. McKissic scored two touchdowns Monday night and Kendall Fuller intercepted a potential game-tying two-point conversion pass in the end zone as the Washington Football Team nipped the Seattle Seahawks 17-15 in Landover, Md.

Washington (5-6) took the lead for good when McKissic rushed 10 yards for a tie-breaking touchdown with 8:30 left in the third quarter. With kicker Joey Slye out due to a hamstring injury, Washington went for two and Antonio Gibson ran it in.

That became the difference when Seattle (3-8) drove 96 yards and pulled within two points when Russell Wilson hit Freddie Swain with a 32-yard scoring strike with 15 seconds left. Wilson tried to connect with Swain on the two-point conversion, but Fuller intercepted the pass.

The Seahawks appeared to recover the ensuing onside kick but were flagged for an illegal formation. Washington’s Adam Humphries recovered another onside kick to seal the outcome.

Taylor Heinicke completed 27 of 35 passes for 223 yards with a touchdown and an interception for Washington, which jumped into the final NFC playoff spot. Gibson rushed 29 times for 111 yards.

Wilson was 20 of 31 for 247 yards with two touchdowns for Seattle, which had the ball for just 18:20.

McKissic left late in the game because of an apparent head or neck injury.

After both teams went three-and-out to start the game, Washington kept the ball for nearly 9 1/2 minutes on its next possession. The drive stalled at the Seattle 5-yard line, so Slye kicked a 23-yard field goal at the 2:59 mark to initiate scoring.

Seattle responded with a six-play touchdown drive that Wilson finished with a 6-yard dart to Gerald Everett with 20 seconds left in the first quarter. Wilson’s 55-yard connection with Tyler Lockett set up the score.

Neither team scored again until 56 seconds remained in the first half. That’s when Heinicke flipped a short pass to McKissic and the running back did the rest for a 10-yard touchdown.

Washington’s 9-7 lead was short-lived. Rasheem Green blocked Slye’s low PAT attempt, scooped up the ball and rumbled into the end zone for a defensive two-point conversion that evened the score entering halftime.

Reports: Brian Kelly leaves Notre Dame for LSU job

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly is leaving the Fighting Irish to accept the same job at LSU, multiple media outlets reported Monday night.

In the latest surprise of the college football coaching carousel, he heads to a Southeastern Conference program not two years removed from winning a national championship under coach Ed Orgeron.

LSU and Orgeron agreed in October that they would part ways after the season. The Tigers finished the regular season 6-6, including an upset of then-No. 15 Texas A&M, to become bowl-eligible.

Notre Dame finished its season 11-1 and is not yet out of the running for a College Football Playoff berth.

Reports said an agreement between Kelly and LSU is likely to be finalized in the next 24 hours, and Kelly had not communicated his plans to his assistant coaches in South Bend, Ind., when the news broke.

Green Bay Packers offensive tackle Billy Turner (77) blocks Los Angeles Rams outside linebacker Von Miller (40) while quarterback Aaron Rodgers (12) throws downfield during their game Sunday, November 28, 2021 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. The Green Bay Packers beat the Los Angeles Rams 36-28.

Reports: Aaron Rodgers not pursuing toe surgery during Packers’ bye

Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers is playing with a fractured pinkie toe, but ESPN and NFL Network reported Monday that he is not planning to undergo surgery to repair the injury this week while the Packers are idle.

The Packers have a bye week in Week 13 before returning to the field Dec. 12 against the Chicago Bears. That would give Rodgers some time for it to heal up before he has to play again.

But Rodgers did not seem hindered by the toe when he threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in Green Bay’s 36-28 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. The win lifted the Packers to 9-3.

“The toe felt good most of the game,” Rodgers said Sunday. “Was just actually in talking with the docs. Not sure at this point; we’re going to do some more testing in the morning and get a better view of what’s going on in there, and then make a decision at that time.”

Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur confirmed Monday that surgery does not appear to be Rodgers’ course of action.

Rodgers said he broke the toe while quarantining with COVID-19 earlier this month. He did not practice all week leading up to the Rams game.

The reigning league MVP has thrown for 2,878 yards, 23 touchdowns and four interceptions with a 66.2 completion percentage in 11 games.

Niners WR Deebo Samuel (groin) out 1-2 weeks

San Francisco 49ers leading receiver Deebo Samuel will miss one to two weeks with a groin strain.

Niners coach Kyle Shanahan also said Monday that linebacker Fred Warner will miss this week’s game against Seattle with a hamstring injury.

Samuel left Sunday’s game in the second half against Minnesota after his groin area got tight on a running play. He finished with six rushes for 66 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught a pass for 12 yards.

He leads the 49ers in catches (56) and receiving yards (1,006). He’s the first WR in NFL history with 1,000 receiving yards, five receiving TDs and five rushing TDs in a season, per ESPN.

Warner will miss the first game of his career. He has 92 tackles – four for loss – and two fumble recoveries in 11 starts this season. He has played in every game in three-plus seasons in San Francisco. He made All-Pro and the Pro Bowl last season.

Shanahan also said rookie RB Trey Sermon could be headed to injured reserve with an ankle injury suffered in Sunday’s game. He would need to miss three games.

Reports: LSU making ‘aggressive’ push for Brian Kelly

LSU has set its sights on Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly in its coaching search, multiple media outlets reported Monday.

The Athletic termed it “an aggressive push” on LSU’s part to hire Kelly, while Sports Illustrated reported that interest on Kelly’s part has yet to be confirmed.

Ever since LSU made the decision to part ways with Ed Orgeron Oct. 17, speculation had mounted that the Tigers would seek a high-profile replacement.

That had been athletic director Scott Woodward’s operating procedure at previous stops at Washington (Chris Petersen) and Texas A&M (Jimbo Fisher). More recently, Woodward pried national championship-winning women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey away from Baylor to assume the same post at LSU.

And Woodward hasn’t shied away from making public the lesson learned from the Peterson experience.

As Sports Illustrated detailed in a 2018 profile, “Don’t assume any coach is off the table.”

Kelly is Notre Dame’s all-time winningest coach and has led the Fighting Irish to a pair of College Football Playoff appearances among five straight double-digit winning seasons.

The Notre Dame coach has 263 career wins, third-most among FBS head coaches, with a record of 113-40 with the Fighting Irish.

Raiders TE Darren Waller (knee) week-to-week

Las Vegas Raiders tight end Darren Waller is week-to-week with knee injury he sustained in last week’s Thanksgiving Day game.

An MRI last Friday revealed that Waller was spared serious injury, suffering a strained IT band.

Raiders interim head coach Rich Bisaccia said Monday that Waller improved over the weekend and will be evaluated ahead of this week’s game against Washington.

Also, defensive end Carl Nassib (knee) is week-to-week with a knee injury. But Bisaccia said linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski (ankle) could return this week.

Waller, 29, did not play in the second half of Thursday’s 36-33 overtime victory against the host Dallas Cowboys. He grabbed his knee after being tackled following a 21-yard catch with 12:33 left in the first half.

Waller rode the bike on the sidelines and was examined at halftime before being ruled out by the team just after the start of the third quarter.

The former sixth-round draft pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2015 had two receptions for 33 yards against the Cowboys. The 2020 Pro Bowl selection ranks second on Las Vegas (6-5) in receptions (53) and receiving yards (643) behind wide receiver Hunter Renfrow. Waller has two touchdowns in 10 games.
