Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze greets fans during Tiger Walk before Auburn Tigers take on Oklahoma Sooners at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024.

Auburn coach Hugh Freeze battling early stage prostate cancer

Auburn coach Hugh Freeze was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, the university said Friday.

Auburn said Freeze’s cancer is in the early stages and is “very treatable and curable.”

Freeze, 55, will continue with his coaching duties while undergoing treatment.

“Recently, Coach Freeze was diagnosed with an early form of prostate cancer,” the school said in its announcement. “Thankfully, it was detected early and his doctors have advised that it is very treatable and curable.

“He will continue his normal coaching duties and responsibilities, and with forthcoming proper treatment, is expected to make a full recovery. Coach Freeze is incredibly appreciative of our medical professionals and has asked that we use his experience as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing and scheduling annual health screenings.”

Freeze has an 11-14 record after two seasons at Auburn. The Tigers went 5-7 last season and didn’t qualify for a bowl game.

Freeze was coach at Liberty for four seasons before taking the Auburn gig after the 2022 season. He also has held Division I coaching jobs at Arkansas State (2011) and Ole Miss (2012-16) and has a 94-57 record.

Auburn’s spring drills are slated to begin in late March.

Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers (8) could have an opportunity to play in New York again next season -- for the Giants.

Reports: Giants switch QB focus to Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers’ goal of playing in New York a few more years might still be attainable.

According to reports, the New York Giants are pursuing the 41-year-old quarterback who will no longer suit up for the Jets under new coach Aaron Glenn.

A two-year run with the Jets is coming to an end after Rodgers and Glenn met to discuss the future. The Giants are trying to end a two-year slump where offensive line injuries, poor quarterback play and assorted other issues have led to a combined 9-25 record after reaching the playoffs in 2022.

Rodgers joined the Jets amid much fanfare ahead of the 2023 season but suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in the opener. Last season, he rebounded to start all 17 games but the Jets finished only 5-12. He completed 63.0 percent of his passes for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Giants quarterbacks combined for 15 touchdowns and 17 turnovers (13 interceptions) in 2024, when former first-round pick Daniel Jones was benched, then released in November.

The Athletic reported the Giants’ decision-makers were focused on a bid for Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford until Friday, when he agreed to a restructured contract to return to Los Angeles.

The Giants also hold the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 draft.

A four-time MVP and 10-time Pro Bowl selection, Rodgers is the active NFL leader with 62,952 passing yards and 503 touchdown passes in 20 seasons with the Green Bay Packers (2005-22) and Jets.

Report: ‘Hard Knocks’ to feature UNC, Bill Belichick after NFL teams decline

Bill Belichick’s North Carolina program will be the featured team on HBO’s upcoming offseason version of “Hard Knocks,” per a report Friday from Front Office Sports.

The decision to turn to Belichick, an NFL head coach for 29 seasons with the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots, came after no NFL team would agree to sign on, per the report.

The New York Giants were featured last season, and it’s the filmed conversations that general manager Joe Schoen had regarding the future of free-agent running back Saquon Barkley that reportedly caused teams to shy away.

Barkley wound up signing with NFC East rival Philadelphia and led the Eagles to a Super Bowl LIX championship earlier this month in New Orleans. In the regular season, he gained 2,283 yards from scrimmage and scored 15 touchdowns.

Barkley broke the NFL single-season rushing record, postseason included, with 2,504 yards. Terrell Davis had held the mark since 1998.

Belichick, who won six Super Bowl trophies with the Patriots, never has appeared on “Hard Knocks.” The Tar Heels will be the first college program featured.

Report: Ravens S Marcus Williams expects to be released

Baltimore Ravens veteran safety Marcus Williams expects to be released, ESPN reported on Friday.

Williams, 28, was benched down the stretch last season, finishing with no interceptions in 11 games (nine starts).

Last month, the Ravens restructured the five-year, $70 million deal he signed in 2022.

According to OverTheCap.com, the restructuring provided $9.9 million in immediate cap relief and another $2.1 million after June 1. Baltimore would eat $6.7 million in dead money in both 2025 and 2026 by releasing him.

Williams has 20 career interceptions, 56 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and 469 tackles in 108 games (106 starts) with the New Orleans Saints (2017-21) and Ravens.

Short on height, QB Dillon Gabriel invites NFL to measure results

INDIANAPOLIS — Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel stands on his experience, results and reputation as a winner as NFL doubters point to a glaring shortcoming compared to other pro prospects: height.

Measured at 5-foot-11, Gabriel said he watches a lot of Baker Mayfield film and compares his play to 49ers starter Brock Purdy and Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa.

“I’m not for everyone,” Gabriel said. “I challenge everyone just to watch the tape, you see the evolution 2019 until now, the growth I’ve made physically and mentally. Even my throwing motion — you see how polished and how detailed it has been. I’m confident in my tape, whether it’s good or bad, I think you can learn from that and most importantly how I’ve responded.”

Gabriel has been a starting quarterback since he was a freshman at Mililani (Hawaii) High School and in successful college stops at UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon with five seasons of 25-plus TD passes and 3,000-plus passing yards. He had 105 TD passes in four seasons as the varsity starter in high school and was Gatorade National Player of the Year with 38 TD passes as a senior.

“I’m a leader. I’m a winner. I’ve won at all three spots, and I’ve done it in big games,” said Gabriel, a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2024 who had 60 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions in his final two college seasons.

“I want teams to believe I can go out there and win games,” he said. “If a team wants a winner, a franchise leader, they know who to call.”

A Pro Bowl selection coming off of a career year with the Buccaneers in 2024, Mayfield measured 6-0 5/8 at the combine and was the No. 1 pick in the 2018 draft. Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray went No. 1 in 2019 despite measuring 5-10 1/8 at the combine.

Gabriel, 24, said he had interviews this week with the Dolphins, Cowboys and Raiders in Indianapolis and has been encouraged with the NFL feedback he has received.

Miami QB Cam Ward not taking field at combine, will throw March 24

INDIANAPOLIS — Top-ranked quarterback Cam Ward came to the NFL Scouting Combine to interview with teams but will not participate in on-field workouts with the position group on Saturday.

Ward could be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and met with the Tennessee Titans this week. Tennessee has the first overall pick but general manager Mike Borgonzi said the franchise is interested in trading the selection to accumulate draft picks in the top 100.

“Whether I go first round or second round, at the end of the day, that draft pick doesn’t mean nothing,” Ward said. “It’s all about establishing yourself once you get the opportunity.”

Ward plans to throw for scouts at the Miami pro day on March 24.

Ward threw an NCAA-record 158 touchdown passes. He had a total of 18,184 yards in five seasons at three different schools. He started his career at FCS program Incarnate Word (2020-21), transferred to Washington State (2022-23), then headed to Miami (2024).

“It’s a positive that he has that grit and determination to prove other people wrong,” Borgonzi said. “Every place he was at, he performed at a high level — that’s something you certainly take into account when you see someone that plays with that chip on their shoulder.”

Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders is another contender to be the top quarterback selected in the 2025 draft. The Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2024, he threw 37 touchdowns and completed 74 percent of his passes. He also won’t throw for scouts and coaches in Indianapolis this weekend.

Ward, 22, said he had nothing to gain taking the field at the Scouting Combine. His five seasons of production in college tell teams everything they need to know about him as a player, he said.

“The tape says everything,” he said. “I think just what separates me from everybody is the way I approach it, the mindset I have going onto the field each and every game.”

Ward said he watched multiple Titans games last season and found the route concepts and general framework of the offense to be so familiar that he believes he’s a “plug and play” fit for Tennessee.

“They’ve got unbelievable players. So I just hope that God puts me, you know, in the situation,” Ward said.

Sanders, 23, made two college stops and won big at Jackson State and Colorado playing for his dad, Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders. He said NFL teams know he was a driving force in turnarounds at both college programs and should not hesitate to invest in him to do the same at the next level.

“I’ve done it over and over and over, so it should be no question why an NFL franchise should pick me,” he said Friday.

Overall, Sanders was 36-15 as a starter — 13-12 at Colorado — with 64 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He said he respects all of the quarterbacks in this draft class but views himself as the best option, even if NFL teams see it differently.

“The number where you (are picked in the draft) don’t matter,” Sanders said. “I reference Tom Brady, because he is the best of the best in all categories. He ain’t go first. So, the number you get picked don’t matter. I wasn’t the top-rated quarterback coming out of high school, because there are a lot of things that people will like and don’t like about me. I’m realistic, and I’m realistic about my family and everything that people say that comes with it.”

Texas Longhorns wide receiver Isaiah Bond (7) runs a drill during practice on the University of Texas campus in Austin, Dec. 27, 2024 ahead of the second round playoff game against Arizona State in the Peach Bowl on the New Years Day.

Ex-Texas WR Isaiah Bond targets 40 record: ‘Might run a 4.1’

INDIANAPOLIS — Isaiah Bond is ready to run down records and fly past another former Texas Longhorns wide receiver at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Bond said Friday morning at the Indianapolis Convention Center he is ready to make headlines when wide receiver workouts begin across the street at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday.

“I’m going to break the record tomorrow, for sure,” Bond said. “I anticipate running 4.20 or possibly, if I’m feeling great, I might run a 4.1.”

The standing mark of 4.21 seconds was set last year by Kansas City Chiefs first-round pick Xavier Worthy, another Texas wide receiver.

Bond, 20, transferred to Texas before the 2024 season after starting his college career at Alabama. His track background long has been evident on the field, but his hands aren’t always as reliable as Worthy’s. In 2024, he caught 34 passes for 540 yards with five touchdowns and touched 22 mph on a 51-yard TD catch against Texas-San Antonio. Two of his five touchdowns last season came against UTSA.

“I’ve been running my whole life,” Bond said. “I’ve been one of the fastest my whole life so I’m going to go out there and when practice meets preparation, greatness is achieved. So I’m just going to trust my training and put on a show.”

Bond was a track star and high school All-American wide receiver in Georgia. He won the Georgia 6A 100-meter (10.51) and 200-meter (21.19) state titles as a junior and has personal bests of 10.48 (100 meters) and 21.05 (200 meters).

Bond started 12 games and played in 27 at Alabama. He led the Crimson Tide with 48 receptions for 668 yards in 2023.

Reports: Rams, QB Matthew Stafford to meet Friday

The Rams and Matthew Stafford are set to meet on Friday as rumors swirl about the quarterback’s future in Los Angeles, multiple outlets reported.

The team gave Stafford’s camp permission to contact other teams to assess his market value. He has two years left on his current deal with a salary of $27 million in 2025 and only $4 million guaranteed. By base salary — $23 million — Stafford is No. 8 in the NFL, using current salary information.

Stafford, 37, should be able command more than that should the Rams trade him to a quarterback-needy team, The Athletic reported.

The New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders both have given details of a potential contract offer to Stafford’s representatives, with each team thinking a two-year deal with guaranteed money of between $90 million and $100 million is in the ballpark, per the report.

Rams coach Sean McVay said earlier this week that the team would like to retain Stafford as its starting quarterback but there was much to consider. His contract would need to be renegotiated, for starters.

“There’s no discrepancy on us wanting him to continue to lead the way and be our quarterback. The interesting and the challenging dilemma and dynamics within this are, ‘Hey, how do you continuously as a head coach look at the short term and the long term and be able to figure out what does that really look like?’” McVay said on the “Fitz & Whit” podcast.

The Giants have the No. 3 pick in the 2025 draft, with the Raiders scheduled to pick No. 6. Whether they choose to use those picks on a quarterback or potentially use them to acquire an established QB remains to be seen.

Stafford is among the league’s statistical greats, ranked 10th all-time in career passing yards (59,809) and touchdown passes (377), and ninth in both pass completions and attempts. He’s 5-2 with the Rams in the playoffs, including a victory in Super Bowl LVI in 2022, after going 0-3 in the postseason over his 12 seasons in Detroit.

Eagles hire Bowling Green head coach to handle QBs

Bowling Green head coach Scot Loeffler resigned to become quarterbacks coach of the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on Friday.

Loeffler, 50, spent the past six seasons at Bowling Green. He replaces Doug Nussmeier, who followed former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to New Orleans, where he is the new coach of the Saints.

The Falcons were 7-6 in 2024 and 27-41 with three bowl game appearances during Loeffler’s tenure.

The former Michigan quarterback was an NFL quarterback coach with the Detroit Lions in 2008 and has extensive coaching experience in college, including working under Urban Meyer at Florida.

Bowling Green is beginning the search process for its next head coach.

“BGSU is a special university and community that truly embraces relationships, people and the student experience,” Bowling Green athletic director Derek van der Merwe said in a statement.

“In these last six seasons, Scot built a very successful program in a challenging climate in collegiate sports. More importantly, he built this program while ensuring his team and coaches were truly committed to the values and mission that make this university great. Like other great coaches in the history of BGSU football, he has demonstrated that when you build around the strengths of this University and its mission, anything is possible. I am looking forward to this process of finding the next great leader for our program who embraces what it means to be a Falcon.”

Buccaneers restore Jon Gruden to Ring of Honor

Less than four years after removing Jon Gruden from their Ring of Honor, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers restored the distinction for the Super Bowl-winning coach on Thursday.

Gruden was removed from the Ring of Honor in October 2021 after leaked emails showed he used misogynistic, racist and homophobic language. The scandal prompted Gruden to resign from his job as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Buccaneers wrote in a statement on Thursday, “Jon Gruden was initially inducted into the Buccaneers Ring of Honor based on his many accomplishments during his seven seasons as our head coach and he remains a significant figure in the history of our franchise. Upon further reflection, we have decided to reinstate him into the Buccaneers Ring of Honor.”

When the Buccaneers took Gruden out of the Ring of Honor, they stated that “his actions go against our core values as an organization.”

Gruden, 61, coached Tampa Bay from 2002-08, guiding the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl title in his first season. He compiled a 57-55 regular-season mark as Tampa Bay’s head coach, plus a 3-2 postseason record.

He also coached the then-Oakland Raiders from 1998-2001, and he was back with the Raiders from 2018-21 (through their move to Las Vegas in 2020) before his resignation.

Overall as an NFL head coach, Gruden has a 117-112 regular-season record and a 5-5 postseason record.
