Raiders’ Fernando Mendoza to wear No. 15 with blessing from Tom Flores

Top overall draft pick Fernando Mendoza will wear jersey No. 15 with the Las Vegas Raiders.

The selection of that jersey number comes with the blessing of Hall of Famer Tom Flores, a two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach of the Raiders as well as the first quarterback in franchise history. Flores wore the No. 15 with the then-Oakland Raiders from 1960-66.

“He deserves my blessing,” Flores said, per the team website. “Because if he’s not the real deal, I don’t know what the hell I’m doing.”

Flores, 89, didn’t stop there.

“He’s perfect,” Flores said of Mendoza. “He can make every throw. He can make the plays. What can’t he do? He does it all. He’s fun to watch. … Plus, he’s a good-looking kid. Like me.”

Mendoza repaid the compliment upon hearing it.

“He’s more handsome than me,” Mendoza said. “But, it speaks to the testament of once a Raider, always a Raider. Of how involved the alumni is. And I’m so blessed to be a part of this organization. I can’t thank (Flores) enough. I’m so blessed.”

Flores, obviously, wasn’t the only player to wear No. 15 with the Raiders, who don’t retire jersey numbers. Fellow quarterbacks Jeff Hostetler, Matt Flynn and Gardner Minshew II have won the number, as well as wide receivers Michael Crabtree and Nelson Agholor.

Mendoza, 22, provided the signature moment to his epic season with a dive across the goal line on fourth down in the No. 1 Hoosiers’ 27-21 victory over No. 10 Miami in the College Football Playoff national championship game on Jan. 19.

Listed at 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, Mendoza completed 72% of his passes for 3,535 yards and 41 touchdowns this past season. He also rushed for 276 yards and seven scores in his lone season with Indiana after transferring from Cal (2023-24).

Panthers pick up QB Bryce Young’s 5th-year option

The Carolina Panthers officially picked up quarterback Bryce Young’s fifth-year option on Wednesday.

The move, which Panthers general manager Dan Morgan has been adamant was coming this offseason, keeps the No. 1 overall pick in 2023 with Carolina through the 2027 season.

The deadline for fifth-year options to be signed for 2023 first-round picks is May 1. Young is set to make $29.5 million guaranteed in 2027 under the option, although Morgan has also discussed the possibility of signing the quarterback to a long-term extension.

Young, who turns 25 in July, is coming off a season where he set career highs for completion percentage (63.6), passing yards (3,011) and passing touchdowns (23). He led Carolina to its first playoff appearance since 2017 and first NFC South title since 2015.

Of Young’s league-leading 12 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime since he was drafted in 2023, six of them came last season.

Over three seasons, Young has thrown for 8,291 yards, 49 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in 46 games (44 starts). He has rushed for 718 yards and eight scores and has a 14-30 record as a starter.

Quarterbacks Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel practice together at the Browns mini camp in Berea on April 21, 2026.

Call it a comeback? Deshaun Watson reportedly leading Browns’ QB competition

A competition to be the QB1 in Cleveland has a comeback candidate in the lead, according to the Plain Dealer.

Deshaun Watson currently is ahead of Shedeur Sanders in an ongoing competition under first-year head coach Todd Monken, per the report.

Watson, 30, emerged from the first minicamp of Monken’s tenure with a grasp on the starting spot but Monken did not make an official announcement or declare a “leader” at this stage of the offseason. Monken said he hopes to have a better read on the QB pecking order by the end of the June 9-11 minicamp, a final on-field team session prior to July training camp.

Watson did not play last season while recovering from an Achilles injury and two corrective surgeries. His health issues have been one of the few constants during Watson’s time with the Browns, who acquired him from the Houston Texans in a 2022 trade.

In three seasons in Cleveland, Watson has never started more than seven games. He has produced 19 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions while being sacked 70 times in 19 total games.

Sanders has been upbeat in his first full offseason as a pro after Monken was positive about how he felt about the former Colorado quarterback during pre-draft evaluations before the 2025 draft. The Browns, then coached by Kevin Stefanski, selected Dillon Gabriel in the third round before taking Sanders two rounds later.

Sanders had seven touchdowns, 10 interceptions and was sacked 23 times in 2025. He was given a shot as the starter after Joe Flacco was benched (and traded to the Cincinnati Bengals) and Gabriel took over.

The Browns drafted another quarterback — former Boise State and Arkansas passer Taylen Green — with the 182nd overall pick last week. Green is viewed as a developmental prospect posing no immediate threat to the competition to start in 2026, but his tools are intriguing. At 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, Green wowed at the NFL Scouting Combine with a 4.36 40-yard dash and a 43.5-inch vertical jump.

Report: Texans, LB Azeez Al-Shaair reach 3-year extension

Pro Bowl linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension with the Houston Texans, NFL Network reported on Wednesday.

Financial terms were not disclosed for Al-Shaair, who became the second key defensive player to sign an extension with the team this month. All-Pro defensive end Will Anderson Jr. signed a three-year, $150 million deal ($134 million guaranteed) on April 17.

Al-Shaair’s current contract was set to expire after the 2026 season. Now, the 28-year-old is tied to the franchise through 2029 and coming off the best season of his career.

Al-Shaair, a team captain and first-time Pro Bowl selection in 2025, recorded 103 tackles, nine passes defensed and two interceptions in 16 games (all starts) during the regular season.

He has totaled 535 tackles, six sacks, five forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and four interceptions in 100 career games (75 starts) with the San Francisco 49ers (2019-22), Tennessee Titans (2023) and Texans. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent.

Report: ESPN, Ian Rapoport finalizing long-term contract

ESPN is finalizing a long-term detail to retain NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport, Front Office Sports reported on Wednesday.

Keeping Rapoport in the fold gives ESPN arguably the two top insiders in the NFL along with Adam Schefter.

ESPN plans to have Rapoport appear across its platforms and continue reporting for NFL Network, per the report.

Rapoport covered the New England Patriots for the Boston Herald for three seasons before joining NFL Network.

Fans vote TE Rob Gronkowski into Patriots’ Hall of Fame

New England fans voted tight end Rob Gronkowski into the Patriots Hall of Fame, the team announced Wednesday.

Gronkowski, 36, will become the 38th inductee. The date of the induction ceremony will be announced after the 2026 NFL schedule is released.

“Gronk” was a three-time Super Bowl champion, four-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl selection in nine seasons with the Patriots from 2010-18. He added a fourth Super Bowl ring alongside ex-Patriots quarterback Tom Brady with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2020 season.

“Rob Gronkowski’s performance on the field was extraordinary, but it was his infectious energy and consistently positive presence that truly set him apart,” said Patriots chairman and CEO Robert Kraft.

“He always brightened everyone’s day. He earned the respect of coaches and teammates through his work ethic, preparation and unselfish approach, while redefining what it meant to play his position. Rob became a fan favorite almost immediately and remained the standard at tight end for nearly a decade. We look forward to celebrating his induction into the Patriots Hall of Fame and, in time, the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”

Gronkowski’s name will appear on the ballot for the first time in the next voting cycle to determine the Class of 2027 at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

The Patriots drafted Gronkowski in the second round in 2010. He recorded a career-high 1,327 receiving yards and led the NFL with 17 touchdown receptions in his second season in 2011.

In 115 games with New England, he caught 521 passes for 7,861 yards and 79 touchdowns. He added 81 catches for 1,163 yards and 12 scores in 16 postseason contests with the Patriots.

Lions linebacker Jack Campbell practices during minicamp at Allen Park.

Report: Lions decline LB Jack Campbell’s fifth-year option

The Lions reportedly made a split decision with their 2023 first-round draft selections, picking up running back Jahmyr Gibbs’ fifth-year option but not All-Pro linebacker Jack Campbell’s.

Fox 2 Detroit broke the news Tuesday night and a source confirmed the information to ESPN.

Gibbs will earn a guaranteed $14.29 million for the 2027 season. Campbell’s option would have paid him an estimated $21.925 million, which is more than the league’s highest-paid off-ball linebacker, per ESPN.

ESPN reported that the Lions want to bring Campbell back on a long-term extension, as well as Gibbs. Tight end Sam LaPorta and Brian Branch, also are due for extensions. Since they were not first-round picks, the Lions do not need to sign them to extensions immediately.

Gibbs, 24, made the decision a no-brainer by racking up 5,029 yards from scrimmage with 49 touchdowns in 49 games (24 starts) across his first three seasons, earning three straight Pro Bowl selections.

Campbell, 25, earned All-Pro first-team and Pro Bowl honors last season with career highs in tackles (176), sacks (five) and forced fumbles (three) in 17 starts. He has 402 tackles and 8.5 sacks through 51 games (46 starts).

The Lions took Gibbs with the 12th overall pick and Campbell with the 18th selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Report: Broncos’ Bo Nix underwent ankle cleanup procedure

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix recently underwent a successful pre-planned cleanup procedure on his injured right ankle, NFL Network reported on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old sustained a season-ending fractured right ankle moments while leading Denver to a win over the Buffalo Bills in an AFC divisional playoff game. Nix underwent surgery two days later in Alabama.

Nix, heading into his third pro season, is expected to be slowed into action throughout Denver’s voluntary offseason programs and OTAs shortly after, per the report. The Broncos plan take it “very easy” with the quarterback, according to NFL Network.

“He had a recheck that was scheduled,” Denver coach Sean Payton said Saturday. “He’s doing great. We’re excited about his progress. These guys will be coming in here. … He’s here.”
