The San Francisco 49ers placed center Eric Heitmann on injured reserve today, the move they needed to clear a spot for linebacker Thaddeus Gibson, who was claimed off waivers on Monday from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Heitmann’s season was ended with a neck injury. He also suffered a broken leg during training camp, and he did not play this season. The veteran has been replaced by David Baas, who could be claiming the job for the longterm.
What role Gibson will play for the Niners remains to be seen. They have been solid at linebacker this season. The team is on a bye this week after playing in London.
