He replaces Jim Harbaugh, who's now the Michigan coach.
Tomsula was interim coach in 2010 when Mike Singletary was fired and won a game.
Tomsula provides continuity.
The 49ers also interviewed Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase, former Washington Redskins and Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, new Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin and Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, now the New York Jets coach.
