Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, who led the Tigers to a berth in the BCS national championship game, was named The Associated Press Player of the Year on Wednesday.

The Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback added the latest award to his collection of honors, which includes the Davey O'Brien and Maxwell awards.

Much like the race for the Heisman, the AP vote was a landslide. Clearly, the NCAA investigation into his recruitment, which found that father Cecil tried to sell his son's services to Mississippi State, had no effect on the dual-threat signal caller during the awards season.

The 6-6, 250-pounder received 51 votes from the 60-member AP football poll panel. Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore received three, Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck earned two and four ballots were unreturned.
