The Denver Broncos have cut veteran linebacker Joe Mays.
It was a bit of a surprise given the timing of his release just before training camp.
The 5-foot-11, 245-pounder had just 20 tackles in six games and four starts last season.
And he was just entering the second year of a three-year, $12 million contract.
He was due a $4 million base salary, and the Broncos likely felt that was too expensive for his production or lack thereof this past season.
They pick up $3.5 million in salary-cap space. Just $500,000 of his salary was guaranteed.
