With running back Andre Ellington going on injured reserve, the Arizona Cardinals signed veteran safety Chris Clemons.

Clemons, 29, was signed because safety Tyrann Mathieu has a left thumb injury.

Clemons played for defensive coordinator Todd Bowles with the Miami Dolphins.

"Chris is a big, active safety Todd has had in the past," Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said. "He is aware of our system and we'll plug him in and see what we can get out of him in two walkthrough days and see if he can play Thursday night."

Clemons has 256 tackles, four interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Clemons was cut by the Houston Texans in August after signing a two-year, $2.7 million contract.
