Michael Crabtree was forced to have surgery on his left foot before the 2009 draft and that same foot is causing issues for him again.

Crabtee was mostly an onlooker during the first day of the San Francisco 49ers’ player-run minicamp today, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. One of Crabtree’s teammates told Barrows the former first-round draft pick is taking it easy because he doesn’t want the situation to become serious.

For his part, Crabtree isn’t talking, but the news explains why he also didn’t do much in the first minicamp that quarterback Alex Smith organized. Crabtree has experimented with some new shoes. The 49ers are not aided by the four-month old NFL lockout because the team’s trainers cannot work with Crabtree.

Hopefully, it’s just Crabtree being careful to ensure he’s ready when football matters. It’s definitely something worth tracking.
