Let's take a look at what's happening across the nation on this Tuesday afternoon...

• Cal's Jeff Tedford held his pre-spring practice presser on Monday, and the head coach said that he won't rush early enrollee freshman quarterback Zach Kline, who threw 36 touchdowns as a senior for nearby Danville. "We have to be careful about putting too much pressure on him." Starter Zach Maynard and backup Allan Bridgford will be the first two quarterbacks to throw in spring practice, with the rest of the reps divided between Austin Kinder, Kyle Boehm and Kline. There have been persistent rumors that Maynard was dealing with academic trouble, to which Tedford maintained "there is nothing there." The rumors, of course, led many to speculate that the strong-armed Kline would have a better chance to possibly win the job before the season opener. Instead, he will begin his career on the bottom of the depth chart with Tedford concerned about unrealistic expectations for the freshman. Cal begins spring drills March 13.

• Penn State's interest in former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien makes a lot of sense, especially because he has two years of eligiblity remaining and would serve as a nice bridge to the stable of young signal-callers new Nittany Lions head coach Bill O'Brien is striving to stockpile in Happy Valley. While O'Brien does run a sophisticated offense, the former Terps starting QB is a very smart kid. And, quite frankly, he possesses more talent than current PSU QBs Matt McGloin, Robert Bolden and Paul Jones. And keep in mind that it was the play under center that prevented the Nittany Lions from winning a Big Ten title last season. Bill O'Brien's first recruit in the Class of 2013 is a highly regarded quarterback, but Danny O'Brien could be a very viable option to keep that seat warm for whoever will start in 2014.

• Big East presidents are set to vote on Temple's membership in the league on Wednesday in New York, according to Keith Pompey of Philly.com. For 2012, the addition will likely be for football only, with the Owls needing to work with the Atlantic 10 at a future date regarding their Olympic sports. With Big East commissioner John Marinatto's league needing to finalize its football schedule for the fall, it appears that Temple will be the league's eighth member for the 2012 football season.

• Texas fans hoping that early enrollee freshman Connor Brewer would impress this offseason and possibly win the starting job may be disappointed to hear that Holiday Bowl MVP David Ash has impressed thus far in spring drills in the QB battle, according to Cedric Golden of the Austin American-Statesman. Golden says that Ash has emerged as the frontrunner over Case McCoy and that "it's not even close...If early indications mean anything, Ash will be the man behind center when the 'Horns open next season against Wyoming."
