Houston lost more than just its first game of the season Saturday night at UCLA.

The Cougars lost their star quarterback and Heisman Trophy contender, as well.

Case Keenum will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his right ACL when he slipped trying to make tackle on a second-quarter interception.

The fifth-year senior, who is one of the top signal callers in the nation, would need to apply for an NCAA waiver if he wants to return for the 2011 season.

Head coach Kevin Sumlin said Sunday he didn’t know what Keenum’s plans were for the future, but it’s not likely that he would be at full strength for February’s NFL Combine.

Keenum is among the Top 10 in five major NCAA career rankings — passing yards, touchdown passes, pass attempts, pass completions and total offense.

To make matters worse, the Cougars also lost their backup quarterback for the season. Cotton Turner fractured his clavicle in the third quarter of Saturday’s loss and underwent surgery Sunday afternoon at a Houston-area hospital.

True freshman Terrance Broadway, who finished the UCLA game, will battle classmate David Piland to be the new starter.

Sumlin said that Houston’s offense — a shotgun-heavy, spread scheme that features more throws than runs — won’t change much with Keenum out.
