Former Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation for an intoxication manslaughter conviction stemming from a crash that killed his friend and teammate, linebacker Jerry Brown.
Brent could have been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.
Brent had a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit.
Brown's mother has said previously that she has forgiven Brent.
Brent and Brown were teammates at Illinois.
