The son of one of the greats in Notre Dame history has left the school.

Nate Montana, whose father led the Irish to a national championship in 1977, has left the South Bend, Ind., school and transferred to the University of Montana.

“He's enrolled as a student, and he started classes today," Grizzlies athletic director Jim O'Day said. "Then I would assume he's a walk-on, because we have no aid as of this semester."

Nate Montana and his father met with officials from the athletic department, including coach Robin Pflugrad. Nate Montana was a walk-on at Notre Dame and transferred to Pasadena (Calif.) Community College last year. He rejoined the Irish this past season and the 21-year-old junior was third on the depth chart.

Montana is a traditional I-AA power in the Big Sky Conference. In the 1990’s, the program produced Dave Dickenson, one of the finest quarterbacks the CFL has had in the past two decades.
