The New England Patriots have released wide receiver LaQuan Williams, a potential precursor to activating running back Shane Vereen from the injured reserve-designated to return list.
Vereen has been sidelined with a broken wrist.
This is the first week Vereen is eligible to return.
Williams had a previous stint with the Baltimore Ravens, catching four passes since 2011.
Williams tried out for the Oakland Raiders before being signed by the Patriots.
He has recovered from a hamstring injury that initially prompted the Ravens to place him on injured reserve prior to reaching an injury settlement.
