At times, there have been questions about the effort of Shaun Rogers.

But no one questions the lack of effort by Albert Haynesworth.

The Washington Redskins will host Rogers on a visit today at Redskins Park, news first reported by Jay Glazer of Fox Sports on Thursday. The 32-year-old Rogers can be dominant when motivated and if Washington was to sign him it would surely grease the skids for the exit of Haynesworth.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Rogers played nose tackle for the Detroit Lions and could also man that position for the Redskins. However, in the 3-4 defense in Cleveland, he also played end for the Browns and that would give him some versatility in Jim Haslett’s defense. Rogers can still be an effective two-down player and it was somewhat surprising that the Browns sent him packing. Consider that new defensive coordinator Dick Jauron has had great success in the past with wide bodies at tackle. His NFC Central champion Chicago Bears defense in 2001 was anchored by Ted Washington and Keith Traylor.

Rogers is also one of the best at blocking field goals and extra points and could bring that dimension to Danny Smith’s special teams unit.

Because Rogers was cut loose, he is free to sign with other teams before March 4 when the CBA is set to expire.
