Todd Dodge was fired as head coach at North Texas Wednesday morning, according to a report.

Dodge, who was one of the top high school coaches in the country when he was hired by the Mean Green, was in his fourth season at the school.

Todd DodgeICONThe Todd Dodge era is over at North Texas.

The former Southlake Carroll coach never could translate the success he had at the high school level to the college game, as he never won more than two games in his first three seasons at UNT, which is currently 1-6.

He came to UNT after having popularized the spread offense in Texas high school football. While the Mean Green moved the ball and scored points on his watch, they finished last in the country in scoring defense in consecutive seasons in 2007 and 2008 and also struggled on special teams.

He finished with an overall record of 6-37 after being hired following the 2006 season, less than two years after the Mean Green won the last of four consecutive Sun Belt Conference titles.

Athletic director Rick Villarreal had informed Dodge that he would need to win seven games this season to keep his job. But the Mean Green battled the injury bug all season long, as UNT is on its fourth starting quarterback and 12 players have suffered injuries that are potentially season-ending.

Offensive coordinator Mike Canales will take over as the interim coach for UNT.
