Mike Pereira may have just retired as the NFL’s director of officiating meaning he’s no longer going to be on NFL Network breaking down on-field issues. But Pereira will still have a place evaluating the officials in the game as he’s been hired by Fox Sports, according to Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times.
Pereira will be able to evaluate controversial/close calls from the Fox studios and add something to the pre- and postgame coverage by the network.
“If I was given my choice of anything I could do after retiring from the league, this is pretty much it," Pereira told Farmer. “For 12 years I've been teaching officiating to 120 guys," he said. "Now I feel like I'm going to be teaching officiating to millions. I really have a chance to educate people on the rules.”
The microscope has been on officials in various sports recently. Major League Baseball umpires have come under scrutiny for some high-profile errors. What can you say about the work by FIFA officials thus far in the World Cup? It’s been embarrassing. The NFL – with so many potential calls on every play – does a pretty good job every Sunday. Adding Pereira to the mix is a good move.
