Even artists don’t forget where they are when they come to Tuscaloosa.
During a Friday-night performance at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater, rapper Vanilla Ice rocked a Mark Ingram Alabama football jersey, much to the delight of the pro-Crimson Tide crowd.
Vanilla Ice, best known for his hit single “Ice Ice Baby,” removed his jacket to reveal the jersey a song or two into his performance, according to Tuscaloosa sports talk radio station Tide 99.1.
The jersey featured both Ingram’s signature and a BCS National Championship Game patch from the 2009 season. Alabama defeated Texas, 37-21, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., that season – the first of its four national titles over the last seven seasons.
Ingram, a running back, became Alabama’s first-ever Heisman Trophy winner that season. He’s entering his sixth season with the New Orleans Saints this fall.
Vanilla Ice was in Tuscaloosa as a part of the “I Love The ‘90s” Tour. Salt-n-Pepa, Color Me Badd, All-4-One, Coolio and Young MC also performed at the outdoor venue.
According to AL.com, Young MC and Coolio – who also wore some Alabama gear – led “Roll Tide” cheers for the crowd.
Bryant-Denny Stadium doesn’t hold concerts like a few other SEC stadiums do. In April, Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium held a country music concert, while rapper Ludacris performed on the field at Georgia’s Samford Stadium ahead of the school’s spring game.
Tiger Stadium, LSU’s home venue, is hosting the three-day Bayou Country Superfest this weekend. And though it won’t take place at an SEC stadium, the Avett Brothers will kick off Georgia-Florida weekend in Jacksonville this season with a show the night before the game at Veterans Memorial Arena.
