The San Francisco 49ers activated outside linebacker Aldon Smith to the 53-man roster following his suspension.
They placed cornerback Jimmie Ward on injured reserve, ending his season.
Ward has a foot injury.
The 49ers didn't activate nose tackle Glenn Dorsey.
He remains on injured reserve with a torn biceps.
The 49ers had a roster exemption for Smith, who spent the first nine games on the suspended list.
