Could bettors be getting a future college football playoff preview this weekend when the No. 1 Texas Longhorns host the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs as 3.5-point favorites?
Texas maintained their unbeaten record last week after dominating the red River Rivalry with a 34-3 win over Oklahoma as 17-point favorites. Quarterback Quinn Ewers returned from two-game injury absence and passed for 199 yards with a touchdown, and another TD on the ground.
The Longhorns defense continued their impressive start to the season limiting the Sooners to three points while recording five sacks, and a pair of fumble recoveries. That Texas D now leads the nation by allowing a mere 6.3-points and 229.7 yards per game this season.
Georgia is 5-1 SU but has been a nightmare for bettors with five straight losses ATS. Last week they defeated Mississippi State 41-31 but failed to cover as 33.5-point favorites. Bulldogs’ QB Carson Beck passed for 459 yards with three touchdowns in what was a strong offensive effort by Georgia.
Georgia has been solid on the road lately at 9-1 SU, but it hasn’t led to profits for bettors. In those 10 games the Bulldogs are 3-7 ATS, which includes going 1-6 ATS in their last seven. As rare underdogs they’re 1-4 SU and 2-2-1 ATS in their last five.
One injury concern to keep an eye on heading into Saturday’s kickoff is Texas wide receiver Isaiah Bond. He played through an ankle injury last week against Oklahoma but needed to be helped off after landing awkwardly on the same foot later in the game.
Bond is the Longhorns’ leading receiver and is averaging an obscene 17.6 yards per catch. Right now, he’s considered day-to-day.
Texas and Georgia last met up in the 2019 Sugar Bowl. Texas came out on top 28-21 but failed to cover as 13.5-point favorites.
