Eagles vs Rams Betting Preview

After a second-half collapse at Washington on Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles need a home victory to avoid a disastrous 0-2 start. The Eagles face the Los Angeles Rams, whom they have dominated recently to the tune of 12-1-1 ATS in 14 meetings. Doug Pederson is 2-0 against Sean McVay, and the Eagles also covered the spread in both of those games. The Rams own some positive trends and positive momentum here, but look for the Eagles to cover as a small home underdog.

Opening Line: Rams -1 at Eagles +1, Total 46 – SugarHouse Sportsbook

Why the Eagles will cover

It can’t get much worse than what happened on Sunday. After going up 17-0, Washington scored 27 unanswered points to upset the Eagles as 7-point home dogs. The Eagles woes stem mainly from their depleted offensive line, which gets a boost this week, as Lane Johnson is scheduled to return on Sunday.

The Eagles are 36-17 when Lane starts under Doug Pederson and 6-12 without him. Carson Wentz is a completely different QB when Lane plays and I expect that will be the case in Week 2.

Wentz needs a bounce-back game after struggling mightily against a strong Washington defense. The Rams defense looked good on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, especially Aaron Donald. Keeping him in check will be the key to victory. They need to buck a money-losing trend as home underdogs, which  has seen them cover just three times in 14 games as home underdogs since 2011.

Why the Rams will cover

Rams fans could not have asked for a better start to their season. The Rams defeated the Cowboys 20-17 at home. Jared Goff and the Rams offense looked in sync all game, stoking some memories of the dominant 2018 Rams.

LA is at their best when they are spreading the ball around and getting everyone involved. This will be key on Sunday as I expect Darius Slay to follow around star wideout Robert Woods. Woods had a monster game on Sunday, putting up 105 yards on six catches.

If the Rams can spread the ball around and get some favorable matchups, they can put up some points and cover this tiny road spread (which could be bet back to EV by kickoff). The Rams are 8-2 ATS in their 10 road games and a profitable 13-3-1 ATS in 17 recent conference games.

Philadelphia Eagles vs Los Angeles Rams Pick:

I expect a low-scoring game in this battle of yuong franchise QBs, which could favor the UNDER (which is 17-5 in Philadelphia’s last 22 games at home). When it comes to the spread, take the Eagles +1. The Eagles have never gone 0-2 in four years under HC Pederson. Lane Johnson’s return is the key here and I expect a low-scoring Eagles win.
